My hs transcript consists of all honors classes (A's) 5 Aps (A's), except for math. Freshman year B in Honors Geometry, Soph Year D+ in Honor's Algebra II, Junior year B+ in college prep precalc, this (senior) year I am taking Ap stats w/ an A so far. I also rank in the top 5% of my class (~350), and I am a 3 season, 4 year athlete (varsity J+S year and some of soph, captain of 1 varsity sport) with a lot of ECs. I am wondering if this history of weakness in math, along with the D (compared to straight A's in honors and APs) will significantly affect my chances of getting into schools that are considered second tier to the Ivy's (jhu,bu,bc,amherst--considered med. reaches), and if it would be worth it to explain that grade somewhere in my application.

I’ve even got the essay title for you …

“If I could take one thing back”

its definitely a blow, especially considering you never took calc. but if youre going for liberal arts and/or you stress you want to go into something non math-related, like an english major, you still have a shot id say. not jhu or amherst, but the other two possibly. make sure you have kickass test scores and essays tho

That’s quite a range of colleges on your list. BU is nowhere as hard to get into as Amherst and JHU for example. Do you live in a state where you could have retaken the class you got a D in? And what explanation would you use?

I don’t believe the class can be retaken, and even if it could be I don’t think I would have enough time for the deadline. As for an explanation, I was on the bubble for entrance into that class and after struggling 1st quarter(not good at math, at all) the teacher would not let me switch out, also had some serious depression going on. Is this worth mentioning somewhere in the app? Also worth mentioning that despite the D I am still in the top 5 percent of the class(some kind of “learned my lesson” story? lol

My test scores arent “kickass”, but they are perfectly average, if not above average, for most of the schools I am applying to, with the exception of schools like jhu, amherst, brandies, which I consider pretty high reaches, <20-40%
