One day left to decide.......what to do about college?

Here is the deal. I really don't know what do do about school.

I was accepted 3 places.
Boston University
University of Rhode Island
Emmanuel College(LAC in Boston)

I was waitlisted at:
Northeastern University
Syracuse University
RPI
WPI
University of Chicago

Normally this seems like a no brainier, go to BU. I would love to do that, However they gave me NOTHING in aid. I mean the $5k in loans and nothing else. That means I would be $200,000+ in debt when I graduate, I don't believe that is practical or a good choice.

So that leaves me with 2 choices, neither do I like:
University of Rhode Island
Emmanuel College

I am from Rhode Island, so URI is my state's only university. It has a large amount of classes which I find appealing, some decent programs including an engineering program. The Campus is fairly nice and I do know quite a few people going there. There is a lot going on there and it feels like a college. However the location is horrid, it 25 minutes the nearest bookstore or burger king and 1 hour from the nearest city. Also because of that, there is a lot of careless drinking and partying, which I am not really FOR. Also the Campus and Class Sizes are obviously going to be bigger which would be a huge adjust from my small school of 700 people.

Emmanuel College on the other hand has the best location one could ask for being in Boston on a nice plot of land. I LOVE it.The school is small and the classes are tiny and look to be easy. There is obviously a lot to do in the city and a few of my friends are going to school there or nearby(Boston College,Northeastern...etc). However I feel the academics are much more limiting because of its size. It lacks an Engineering program and the diverse curriculum a bigger school might offer. So I might need to transfer at some point. Because it is so small I am worried it may be harder to find friends. I mean chances of finding people like you in 15,000 people is much easier then 1,500. Also it lacks that college feel because it only has 3 major buildings with one being a very old admin building and the other being a brand new science building....It is just very small.

At this point you may ask what I want to do.... I don't know I am thinking 50% chance of Engineering ,40% chance of being a lawyer and 10% chance of going for a Ph.D in Physics or what not.

The schools will cost the same.

I would go to a flagship public over a small private. With 15k students, you’ll find people who are not interested in drinking.

Not exactly - the chance that people like you EXIST is higher, but not necessarily the chance of FINDING them. But lacking an engineering program is a biggie. I’d recommend URI rather than a school that doesn’t provide your probable major. If you go to a big school, you can still hunt down the profs and get the small-college attention from a big school. You can’t create an engineering major from a school that doesn’t have one.

It isn’t flagship, It is the ONLY public university in my states :)

true Geekmom.

However my parents who want me to go to 2, argue that I could transfer if thats what I wanted to do…which I suppose is doable.

Transfer is doable, yes, but find out if it is doable at the school you would like to transfer to. Of the colleges you might like better, how many transfer students do they ACTUALLY admit each year? URI is ABET-accredited, which is important for engineering. You’ll be fine. You’ll find non-partying serious students and be happy and be well-educated.

i got into emmanuel but chose my state school over it (even though emmanuel gave me 7 thousand a year). i liked emmanuel and LOVED the location but it has a really off male/female ratio (70 girls/30 guys)

you’ll definitely find people at URI who don’t drink too. good luck!

gleeful…I assume your a woman.
GeekMom,If I was going to transfer I would transfer to one of the schools I was wait listed assuming I don’t get into them.

this is very stressing

Rhode Island and make your own friends who don’t drink to party.
