One Day Suspension

I got suspended for one day for “hacking into the school laptops and gaining administrative access” will this affect my college acceptances? I am a senior and it’s my second semester.

I’m applying to top tier schools.

Thanks

why did you hack in?

Is it your school’s policy to report all disciplinary/ethical infractions to universities (there is no universal approach, each school has it own regulations)? If so, it is possible – although not certain – that your violation will adversely affect your potential acceptances. It would be wise to consult your GC soon and, if necessary, to get ahead of this problem with your universities.

I think that qualifies as a significant event that needs to be reported. Please check the information and instructions you received from those colleges.

Further, please understand a critical point: the WORST possible situation is for your universities to not be advised of this disciplinary action and, therefore, to believe you have intentionally attempted to deceive them, when it is revealed (for example, will the mandatory final transcript list/document this matter, many do?). Currently, you’re a senior who made a serious mistake, nothing more. However, if you are perceived as a senior who made the same error AND then attempted illicitly to hide it, you suddenly will have a FAR more difficult problem. As I suggested in an earlier post, you need to work with your GC immediately and proactively, to get ahead of this situation.

Talk to your GC about how to deal with this.
