One family's BS search and application process — start to finish (and then some)

@queenmother: New school: I don’t see why they wouldn’t be understanding…after all, they accept a number of new juniors, so these kids are all coming from some other school (public or private) unless they are home schooled.

Old school: We had no issues getting letters of recommendation (of course, I didn’t get to see what these folks had to say about 7D2, but in terms of responsiveness, they were fine). As for paying double tuition…no, thankfully daughter asked about possibility of transferring in time to NOT sign new contract for old school. I guess we took a risk in that we had no firm landing place for her until late late spring (well past M10/A10)…but the risk was minimal. If it came to it, she could have gone to local public.

That’s great happy for her that she found a place that she thinks is good for her! I’ve wondered if schools were receptive to transfers because I don’t hear of it too often. Then again, I learn everything about boarding school on this forum.

I’m glad it all worked out, and I hope that someday (when she is in college!) you will tell all.

Speaking of college…for those folks who have been curious and waiting to hear where 7D1 ended up after 4 years at St. Andrew’s…she’s now a sophomore at University of Delaware studying Chemical Engineering (for those who care about these things, it’s a USN&WR Top 10 school in this field…in a 3-way tie for 9th that includes Princeton). She is a Eugene duPont Memorial Scholar, which is a full-ride+ scholarship program. She chose UD over Carnegie Mellon’s engineering school, and has had an excellent experience so far.

Apologies to those whom I promised a blow-by-blow of 7D1’s college process…I just never made the time, and then the moment and muse had passed.

Minor correction (because I know someone will call me out on the error): The ranking I mention above is for graduate programs at the schools. For undergrad programs, UD is still Top 10 in ChemE, but 10th…a place behind Princeton.

Happy it worked out for both of your daughters for this year!
UD is on dd17’s short list. We all loved our (multiple) visits to the campus.

@SevenDad what new school did she land at?

@RuralAmerica: Going to keep that under wraps for a bit, but I encourage rampant speculation.

Has she moved in and started yet? Is she enjoying the change so far?

Okay, for a speculation… so she got tired of city scene so moved to a remote bucolic place
What an interesting twist in the story.

Glad to hear that all worked out. Continued best luck to 7Ds! :-bd

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
While I know all of the speculation posts so far have been tongue in cheek, I would like to remind you that speculation on this forum is not appropriate given the name of the website.

Wishing her the best this year at the new school.

^^ No speculation, I’m willing to tell you the school for a million bucks! (you’re in for half, 7)

@Charger78 : HA – Someone just happened to pose this hypothetical on the college forum today: 'If you suddenly had a windfall of half a million, would it change the list of schools your kid is applying to? ’ Interesting!

@SevenDad Were there several boarding schools with spaces available for late applicants? We are likely to be swimming in that pool this spring with Chimneykid2

@cameo43 , I believe it would ^^

but I could see the list going in two opposite directions for folks with different values!

^^ Windfall of $0.5M would mean significantly less if the person already had a $1M cash to bet.

@chemmchimney: Surprisingly, yes. Of course, you have to look beyond “the usual suspects”.

We kept things very targeted, and that helped. I also noticed that dropping a name or two opened some doors which had initially seemed shut or close to shut.

Since I’m bored this afternoon and the forum has been a little dead lately, I figured now is as a good time as any to share that 7D2 is a happy student (with happy parents) at…George School.

Note: It’s not “The George School”. Just “George School”. Here endeth your lesson for the day.

Congrats to SevenFamily!
