One family's BS search and application process — start to finish (and then some)

How’s she liking it! Beautiful school!

@copperboom: So far, she’s liking it a lot. She’s pursuing an IB degree and combined with the usual ramp up of junior year workload definitely feels challenged (maybe even a little shorter on time than she’d like?). To their credit, Masters prepared her well for workload/time management.

For me as a parent, the most apparent difference is the vibe I get when I see her: definitely one of a more relaxed/at home kid. She always seems happy to return to campus after sports-related training/competition. The current Dean of Students is a great asset to the school/students/parents, IMO.

Would definitely recommend as a school for people who might have SAS on their list. If you like SAS, I think you’ll like George, too. You know, that ethos thing.

Well we loved SAS so maybe if the second child looks at BS we’ll check GS out. A friend of mine is head of another BS up that way and recommended GS last year. Said it rivaled Cates beauty! Alas- no ballet company. I wish her the best of luck- what a strong & thoughtful kid to make such a decision her junior year!

@copperboom , no ballet company but a vibrant dance program. George is indeed an amazing place. You should definitely check it out. (And it is beautiful too.)

Wishing SevenD2 the best 2 years. It’s a very warm, welcoming place, but it says a lot about her that she’s made herself at home so quickly and effectively.

No more speculation! Do I get point for GS being bucolic? ;
Congratulations! Glad to hear all are happy!

Am sure SevenDad dumped the name because he knew how close the speculation delirium was to paying off a cool $$$$. Facts are, he’s never truly “bored” and too much money would upset a perfect status quo. ~O)

does anyone think what I think when I see “BS”?

After filling college apps with DS1, I now see it as Bachelor of Science
Someone thought BS/MD was something entirely different.

Move-out day for 7D2 today at George School. It’s been a good change on the whole…some adjustment needed to new ways of doing things/new social scene, etc. But on the whole, very happy with GS.

@SevenDad, glad to hear that.
@payn4ward, for a moment, I saw an anagram of BS/MD.

Congrats @SevenDad PPD2 is en route to China (in the air) as we speak. This is not her first time. She is going with Harvard Beijing Academy for 9 weeks this time. We went to Hong Kong after graduation from Choate in June 2016, then she went to Beijing for Winter Term in 2015, and we went for a family visit in 2010. They grow up too fast…both Choaties are off and running. Enjoy any time you can with 7D1 and 2 as it will surely fly by.

@preppedparent: 7D1 already back on campus in Newark and working in a lab. We had her home for but a week. We’ll get another two in Aug (trying to fit in a family vacation in during one of those weeks) but yes, they do grow up very quickly…

I had occasion to refer back to this thread via another and thought I’d give a quick update to “bump” it. With yet another A10 behind us, we’re already starting to see a new crop of BS prospects. Can’t believe I first posted this 8 years ago!

7D1 is doing well and wrapping up her Junior year as a Chemical Engineering major at University of Delaware. She was (FINALLY!) selected for the UD Summer Scholars program and will be doing a third summer of on-campus lab work — this time with a professor who I think may end up being her honors thesis advisor. She’s thinking about PhD programs and I’m thinking about making hotel reservations for her graduation. Sigh. The UD school year goes a little longer than most colleges (I pick her up on the 17th) because it has a “Winter Session” and its second semester starts a little later than many schools.

7D2 is in her final few weeks at George School, to which she transferred as a Junior. In the Fall, she heads off to a selective D1 school you’ve all heard of, where she was recruited for fencing. I think of some of the push-back/criticism I got when I mentioned factoring in sports when selecting a BS back in the day…and can only say “THIS, this is why sports was a factor in her application/selection process at the time.” Glad to have two college processes in the rearview mirror.

I’m reading the Frank Bruni book “Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be” and parts of it remind my of my kids and their very different college application processes. Given their raw stats, one might have thought my older girl would be the one going to the single-digit admission rate school…but instead it’s her younger sister — who had a hook that some of the super-selective schools were interested in. But 7D1 is having an excellent experience in an honors program at a state school that’s a Top 10 program in her major. And will graduate without incurring a penny of debt.

I highly recommend the book to anyone in/any parent with a kid in the HS class of 2019 and beyond.

Thanks @SevenDad!! This is a great (now bookmarked) thread!

Thank you @SevenDad !This thread helped us through the application process a couple years ago.
Frank Bruni came to ds’s BS campus to talk about (and sign) his book. Luckily, the timing worked and dh and I got to go. It was very interesting, plus Bruni is an excellent speaker. Equally interesting were the questions asked by the audience! The Q&A got pretty intense - I am thankful ds was only a Freshman at the time.

Really appreciate your update! Congrats to both 7Kids!!!

Congrats to Sevenfamily! This takes me back.

@buuzn03 how do you bookmark a thread on CC? There are several which I refer back to often and would love to tag. Thanks!

@Hopeful0304 Next to the title of the thread there’s a little star. If you click on the star, it bookmarks it. I only view CC on my phone or iPad, so I’m not sure if it’s different if you use a laptop or computer…
Then when I sign in, on the left side it lists my bookmarks, my threads & my notifications.

I hope this helps!!

Two semi-random thoughts that I figured are best put here.

  • Over the weekend, I attended Graduation at Dublin School in NH. A very nice event held at Dublin's beautiful but fairly remote campus. It's a pretty small school (I think 160-ish students total), and I got the feeling that made for a very unique experience. Worth checking out, IMO. As part of the graduation ceremony, one of the speakers remarked that the best gift a graduating student can give is to keep in touch with their former teachers through college and beyond. I thought that was excellent advice.
  • On a sartorial note (somewhat prompted by my attendance at the Dublin graduation), I would advise parents of boys heading off to BS in the next few years to consider outfitting their kids with blue blazers WITHOUT brass buttons. Here's my rationale (and I've had both over the years)...IMO brass-buttons tend to narrow the range of the compatibility/use of a blue blazer. It all but screams "preppy". Whereas blue blazers with dark buttons (I've seen blue or brown buttons) allow a little more flexibility when putting an outfit together. Of course, if the kid's style is all prep all the time, then by all means, go with a brass button blazer.
