One general curiosity about FRQs

I'm taking my first AP, which is AP Bio.. and as I was prepping for it by writing down some answers for released FRQs, I've noticed that the readers sometimes give more credits than the answer deserves and at other times don't.

A few things I want to ask in general about FRQs are:

Do you have to define everything? Sometimes they'd dole out points for defining CERTAIN stuff and then at others they won't..

When the question asks me to describe "a procedure," am I to really talk about only one procedure, or am I to talk about many options?? Well, a 2009 Form B FRQ Bio question asked me to describe "a procedure to determine which bacterial cells have been successfully transformed" but when I did write about only one option, the guidelines don't give me many points... They wanted me to write about multiple possible options..

So how do I discern??
