One mess up and it's over? (SAT)

Ehh... I would not say it's over. The thing is, taking it twice and an improvement in everything is very positive and they won't hold your previous score against you. However, if you take the test like 4 times and you have to mix-and-match, I honestly believe your lower scores will hamper you. I just want to tell you a few ancedotes. A girl first got 2150, retook got 2400, applied ED at Columbia and she was rejected. She also had pretty good of other stuff. Don't know what this says to you. IMHO, I feel they may have looked at her previous score.

a 2150 isnt bad enough to get rejected. she was rejected for other reasons.

Don't take it more than thrice.

It's a mystery to me why someone who believes that he scored 720+ M, 760+ CR, 800 W, is not able to answer his own question with common sense.

i think if someone were to take it three times, but improved in every section each sitting, then that would probably be fine.

I think you need to seriously reconsider applying anywhere if you need to take the SAT 6 times. I imagine the committee member's thoughts: "does this kid have a life? o.O" But whatever. Depends on what college, but most will take your best sections.

Not really. If you get 670-670-670 then 700-700-700 then 730-730-730, say, that doesn't really prove much. Personally, I'd go for the guy who got 700-700-700 and didn't take it again over the first guy, ceteris paribus.

don't take the sat more than three times. colleges will probably start to wonder what this kid does with his life that he has time to waste all these wonderful saturday mornings for a pathetic 4-hour exam. i think you should take the exam more than twice, if you definitely know you are going to improve by a lot your third sitting. sometimes, if you take the exam once, and score well, you may leave college wondering that you have the potential to do even better.
