one more unit!

argh i came in w/ 44 units, which is freshman standing. if i had ONE more, i would be a sophomore standing. i feel really bad that i just didn't make that one unit!!! should it? in the long run does it really matter what standing you are? i am actually a 1st yr/freshman.

doesn't matter!
your first quarter at ucla, your standing didn't matter, only your year (because all frosh sign up at orientation for fall classes).
for winter quarter signups, units IN PROGRESS are taken into account. so while you won't be a sophomore technically until you finish fall quarter and get one more unit, the 44 plus your current units should give you soph standing for winter enrollment.
to confirm this, check ursa for your appointment times and look at what standing it says you have!

as for does standing matter, yes and no. the difference between soph signups and frosh signups can be as much as 3 days (for a good soph time compared to frosh appt time) or as little as 30 minutes. all depends on luck of the draw with your appointment times. but as you get older, obviously junior/senior standing helps you more than sophomore standing, so, it will be beneficial in the long run.

Agreed.

Anyway, you're on the biological sciences - pre-med track, non? It'll make it annoying to register for lab classes (join the rest of them) but otherwise, it doesn't make much of a difference. In terms of earning math and science AP units - you'd have to retake those courses again anyway so that you could apply to medical school. Plus, APs are so vastly different than actual college courses (especially within the maths and sciences).

Regarding that, what if you passed the AP Calc AB test and took Calc 2 at a community college and are taking calc 3 at ucla, is that okay for med school? Or would i have to retake calc 1?

Are there any pre-med Math 3C-ers (Fall Quarter)? The reason I ask is because med schools designate a # of certain math courses required... I don't know how this works with the 3ABC series since you can't advance beyond calculus from 3C... someone help?

Most Med schools require one year of math. This can usually be calculus or statistics, so the 3 series works fine.

Edit: V4run, they don't care how far you get, just how much you take, and AP's don't count, so you will need one more course.

if i want to sign up the moment my first pass registration is opened, i would have to miss class... or perhaps i should bring a laptop and do it at that moment in class... is it really important to register at that right second??

Well, which classes are you signing up for? Just come late to class. It'll take you less than 10 minutes to do your thing if you planned in advance.

Emm: Taking 3A, 3B, and 3C satisfies the med school requirement.

Oh wow. But that seems quite unfair because obviously lower level math courses will be less challenging than higher level courses....

Well yeah... you have a choice...

ge clst 66b, math 3b, chem 14a
who's the chem teacher larsen? i've tried to look him/her up but no results.
