see title.

Not a lot. Go to the admissions website and download the criteria PDF. You will see that alumni legacy is “considered” but not important.

Legacy is not an important criterion, but if you are a top student, it certainly enhances your chances.

Rumor has it that it is worth about a point added to your ACT score so not much.

I’ve met some people with low numbers that got in because of legacy, so it definitely helps. Not a guarantee though.

Kyle, that is not why they got in. Perhaps they got in because they are exceptional in one way or another or because they fit a specific demographic need. Legacy status may influence the outcome for a qualified applicant, but not for a weak candidate.

Some of the arts (Music, Theater, Dance, Art & Design, etc.) do not stand rigidly on the same criteria, especially on ACT scores. If you are looking to major in one of those areas you would also be required to submit a portfolio or to perform at an audition. Even though the ACT requirement is theoretically lower for those majors there is still a minimum, 23 I have heard.

Sorry, I realize I misworded my statement.

What I intended to say was they got in with the HELP of a legacy.

My bad.

31 ACT, 3.6 unweighted gpa (honors and AP), 4’s and 5’s on AP exams, 3rd generation alumni, both parents alumni. Instate. Did not get in.

beechwood-wow…that is rough. What was your weighted GPA? How many AP’s did you have? Did you have a lot of EC’s? I would have thought you would be in since you were in state…sounds like admissions is going to be tough this year based on that!

Our school did not weigh GPA. AP Psych, AP Lit, AP Composition, AP Environmental Sci all 4’s and 5’s. Good but not great EC’s - environmental volunteering, varsity basketball, etc. International Baccalaureate program first two years (tough classes that I don’t think Michigan gave any extra credit for). All teacher recommendations were good and from Alumni.

Much greater weight is placed on economic background, race and sex than legacy. Accepted U of Ill and Case Western but not U of M. As far as I can tell from reading here and talking to others legacy has virtually no influence on admissions.

thanks for sharing your info. hope you are happy wherever you ended up.
