One question about the Major Undecided

Hey guys,

Since I am not 100% sure which major I should choose, I consider to select Undecided as my Major. However I am not yet familar with how this will work. Let's say I apply with Undecided as my Major and a University accepts me. Whats the further procedure ? When will I have to stick to a major ? Before, while or after the freshmans year ?

kind regards

If a school lets you pick Undecided, then they usually don’t require a major selection until the end of freshman or sophomore year. It depends on the college.

So in the freshman year you just complete required courses for your intended major, however in the case of being undecided you choose several courses and may decide at the end of the freshman year ? Am I right ? ^^

Most universities have lots of standard courses for freshman (such as writing), so there wouldn’t be much focus on the major anyway. The later you pick a major though, the more you are risking in terms of taking the wrong classes. However, it is the norm at some schools to go in undecided, so that would be fine.

Ok, Thanks !! one more question though ;
If the app asks the following
Do you intend to enroll in a degree program your first year?

My answer should be NO , since I am still undecided, shouldnt it ?

Correct; your answer should be no if you are undecided.

Re: degree program question - it depends; if you are wanting to receive Federal Financial Aid, it will probably be dependent on you seeking a degree. There’s a difference between an “undecided major” and “non-degree seeking”. You can have an undecided major, but be seeking a bachelor’s degree. You can also be non-degree seeking, which means you are just taking classes and do not plan to graduate.

Most schools will require you to declare a major by the 2nd semester of your sophomore year.

Some schools require you to apply to a specific school or college - for example, the school of engineering, or the college of performing arts. Others have you apply to a specific area (eg the School of Business) after taking some prerequisites.

Every school will have their own policies about declaring majors, etc. so read the fine print for your school.

@college_query
The question asks if he is enrolling in a degree program during freshman year. That has nothing to do with being “degree seeking.” You can’t enroll in a degree program if you are undecided.

If you are enrolling with the intent to graduate with a bachelor’s degree, then you are a degree-seeking student. The answer should be Yes. This is not a question about whether you have declared a major, but whether you intend to graduate with a degree.

Actually I was incorrect. Apparently if you have the intention of getting a degree, you should answer “yes.”
