For schools that require only one teacher rec, DS is trying to figure out whether to send a second rec, and if only one, which one. Five of his schools require 2 recs (all LACs) and 4 require only one (JHU, Tufts, Rochester, CMU). He is applying for science/ engineering.

Math and English teachers have agreed to write recs. DS believes Math teacher will write a stronger rec, and initially had some concerns about what the English teacher might write due to lack of speaking up in class. However, she readliy agreed to write on his behalf, so it may not be an issue.

Regarding the other parts of his app, he is pretty strong with 2300 SAT I(730CR 780M 790W) and UW GPA 3.97 and W GPA 4.72/4.75 max (only one B in most rigorous curriculum available of honors/AP/IB), and pretty solid EC's /awards.

So the question is, for JHU, Tufts, Rochester, and CMU, one rec or two, and if one, which one? The stronger rec is probably the math teacher. The english rec is probably very good, but not outstanding. My inital thought was that submitting just the Math rec would be the way to go, and would support the science / engineering angle. But then at an info session at CMU, the admissions guy said "if you're a math/tech person, send in a English/Humanities teacher rec to show us another side", it sort of raised doubt.

I know I'm splitting hairs here, but he needs to decide what to do.

Your thoughts? What would you do? Thanks!
