At my school, there's a widely known rumor of sort that Rice only accepts 1 student out of the dozens that apply there from each school each year, unless that particular school is packed with phenomenal students. I wonder if there's any validity to this belief. I have heard from friends that, according to our school applicants, that has been the case. However, our school is very new, so the statistic is not to be depended upon (as in there aren't enough repeated information to be judged from). As we are in Houston, I wonder if this myth is true or it's just cases of too many Houstonians (and Texans) applying to Rice, which leads to limited spaces available to them.

If I have to compete against all my friends for that one open spot at Rice, there's no way I can get in. So I'm hoping that this is just a myth.

This is not true. I was worried because I have heard this also, and I knew of 3 athletes already commited to Rice at my school, but I still was accepted. I do not go to a phenomenal school. However, I do know someone who was rejected from my school, but I do not think my acceptance had anything to do with it.

UGH! i sooo wish this were true!! i dont mean to sound rude, but our valedictorian has CHEATED HIS WHOLE WAY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL!!! and i do NOT fancy going to college with him. is there any way i could inform the admssions committee of this???? venting...

This is, at least according to what I've seen, not true at all. Several of my friends have multiple people accepted to Rice in their year - one went to a high school in The Woodlands, another to one in Sugarland, and another grew up in Plano (by Dallas). So, I would say definitely not! Rice will accept more than one from a high school.

I'm the first person in my highschool to be accepted to Rice, but we haven't been established that long either. Apollo--I think Rice's honor code will take care of that. :) I think that if you're found breaking the honor code, you're expelled, but I'm not sure. Besides, there's 999 other freshman at Rice to associate with, so even assuming your vali gets in, you're in good company otherwise. :)
As to the One Student Per School Myth, I do think it is a myth. It may seem true because tons of students from Texas apply thinking, "Oh, that's a nice private school." versus people from out of state who apply thinking, "Holy crap! Rice is the best non-Ivy League ever!" (No offense to other non-Ivy Leagues.) Rice is incredibly selective when it comes to in-state, that's why it may seem like they only accept one student per school.

Apollo- I think you should talk to him about how much Rice values integrity and honor, because they think that's a really big deal. Maybe it would cause him to pick a different school.

One student per school is a myth, though they may be more selective; I'm from a suburban public school about 30 min. from Rice, and 2 athletes and 4 other students were admitted from my school last year, and the year before at least 2 non-athletes got in. Four years ago the top three from my school went there.

Yeah around Houston you will find lots of students from the same HS such as Lamar, Cinco Ranch, Taylor, and St. John's (tons of people). But I was the only one accepted from my school out of about 6 applicants, so it all depends (I'm from North Texas).

in the past, rice accepts about 3 people from my school out of like 20+ people applying. usually only early decision people get in. this year rice accepted 6 out of early, so my class rocks. =)
i live in suburban houston, so lots of people apply to rice.

I may have mixed Rice up with another one of the Ivy Leagues I was formerly interested in applying to. But don't take my word for it when it comes to the extensions--I'm googling info for it now. :)

Hmm any TAMSters here? we certainly do break the myth. I heard 18 got in last year, but then...the counselors said they switched out the admissions committee or something... =(

i hope it's a myth.. my friend and i are both applying and i hope we both get in >< she's valedictorian (im pretty sure) and im salutatorian... sigh... i will be pretty distraught if she gets accepted, and i don't. >:|

I'm the first to be accepted to Rice in at least 5 years (and my HS only has a 10-year history), but there is another girl applying this year for the viola, and I hope she gets in to. She's RD though, so we'll be waiting to find that out.
