They keep rolling in for Columbia :)

One Week, Two Nobel Prizes

Edmund S. Phelps was awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics on October 9 and Orhan Pamuk won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature on October 12. Phelps is the McVickar Professor of Political Economy at Columbia University and Director of The Center on Capitalism and Society at The Earth Institute; he won the award for his analysis of intertemporal tradeoffs in macroeconomic policy. Phelps showed how the possibilities of stabilization policy in the future depend on today's policy decisions: low inflation today leads to expectations of low inflation in the future, thereby facilitating future policy making. Professor Phelps is currently teaching two undergraduate classes: World Economic Problems and a seminar in macroeconomic theory. Four Columbia faculty members have won the Nobel Prize in Economics in the last decade.
