One Year CC Applicant to UC Berkeley

Awaiting the decisions in three weeks, I wanted to ask if anyone knows anything about one year transfers. I currently applied with 68 Semester Units from a California CC as a History major to UC Berkeley. I have a 4.0 GPA with four courses in Fall 2017 and two courses in Winter 2018, but I am taking ALL FOUR pre-requisite courses in the Spring (19 units in total) with two other IGETC courses. I am finishing my IGETC this semester. How do you guys feel that my chances are? I filled out all possible information for extracurriculars (volunteer, work, etc). I am very nervous because I read on some threads that some one-year applicants with 4.0s were rejected from Berkeley. Please help!

@farquad24 Hi there! I am also applying to Berkeley (and UCLA) as a one-year History transfer. I do have to say that it’s a bit concerning that you are taking all four of the required History prerequisite classes in the Spring, along with two other IGETC courses (which hopefully are not the extremely important English or Math requirements!). The #1 reason why most one-year transfers with 4.0 gpas get rejected is because they leave important requirements such as major prep, IGETC, math/English classes until the Spring semester, or because some one-years use lots of AP credit but dont have enough letter grades in CC courses for Berkeley to adequately judge their application. Are your 68 semester units that you mentioned solely from CC classes or did you also compute AP credit into that equation? If the latter, then Berkeley might feel apprehensive when reviewing your application as they will be basing their decision mainly upon the grades in your Fall 2017 courses (no guarantee if they’ll consider Winter grades), and the fact that many important classes were left to the Spring will not look very good. I predict you might have about a 20-25% chance of getting in.

In three weeks you’ll finally know, and if you get in, congrats! But if you don’t get in, you can simply spend another year at CC finishing up all the requirements, and if you get everything done by next Fall and you reapply, your application would be almost 10x more competitive than it is now. Good luck!

@need2go2UCLA Damn, it would suck to be rejected because i’m taking those four History courses at three different colleges, and i’m commuting almost 30 minutes everyday. But, thank you for your response! I just really hope they see my application as effort rather than lack of preparation…
