My son just got suspended from college for one year for plagiarism. He insists this was not intentional as he omitted inserting the name of an author in the body of an essay for an assignment, though he had given full details in the bibliography.

I would like some information on what this may mean for the future and suggestions on how he may wisely use this time away from college.

I must add that i am in full support of my son and wish to provide the best possible advice at this point.

He is an international student and he feels VERY unhappy about the whole situation.

I actually know of several cases where students got suspended for 1 year doing something like this (yes, don’t plagiarize and cite sources correctly).

He should first go to the departement that is responsible for international students to find out what his options are. He is an international student and his visa (probably an F-1) may not allow him to stay in the US if he is not a student anymore. It may be essential to find another college immediately to avoid being illegal in the country. There may be other solutions. I don’t know what his possibilities are. The department responsible for international students should. All I know is that the visa rules are rather strict. It’s already a tough situation to be in for a student from the US. For an international student it may be even tougher.

Double check that those who suspended him knew he omitted inserting the name of an author in the body of the essay for an assignment, though he had given full details in the bibliography. If not, appeal.
