one year transfer confusion

OK i posted a thread earlier asking about a major decision, now this is a different question.

Im currently 18, just got out of HS in June attending a CC.

Coming in i had 29 units (GE's and Languages) from CC that I tool while still in high school.
Then - I also have 4 AP tests (i got a 4 on enviro, art history, and literature and a 3 on stats) which count for appx 24 units and an art GE, eng 101 ge, science ge and a math ge (which im already way past). Im taking 21 units (this semester at CC which is also my first) so after this semester i'll have around 75 units. right now i have a 3.95 gpa and itll probably be around a 3.9 or so when I'm done with this semester. also, 2 of these classes (bio and speech 105) that im taking now are honors. I'm in the Tap program so i would only need a total of 4 honors classes with harder majors (which I am) to transfer. So my IGETC is done. The problem is that I'm applying now, to start fall 2010

At the moment im in precalc (i got screwed over with a teacher in HS), bio H, chem (intro), speech 105 H, and trig concurrently

My possible majors include:chem engineering, chemistry, pharmacy (so i guess bio chem even though im not a huge fan of bio), and possibly a minor in intl business or s double major in any of those things.

I know there are major prereqs: such as phys(which i plan on taking next sem), calc(also next semester), general chem(next semester). Im completely willing to take all these classes plus a higher bio course and general engineering course (5 classes) like I'm doing now, all next semester. Im just confused on if all my major req's have to be done before I apply ? If thats the case how does ANYONE get out in 2 years?? i have 4 upper division chem courses, 3 physics, and 4 calcs to do.

On my application can i just write that im GOING to do these classes all next semester? including 2 more honors classes to finish TAP? im so confused on what to do and if they will accept me or not because my GE's are done, its the major req's that are the problem!

Schools: UCLA, UCSD, UCSB (LA is my top choice though)
I feel like at CC, im being robbed of a college experience, I hate it there and I just want to get out ASAP. I'd rather spend 3 years at a UC then another year here at CC. I was a good high school student also if that counts for anything (sports, 3.8 gpa, AP and honors courses, volunteering hours at a blood bank, so on) and i got a scholarship also. I just didnt apply to any UC's because lets get real, even with a 3.8 theres no way I was getting a scholarship to my desired schools.

fall 2011**

I don’t know about your major, but I’m a poli sci one year transfer and I got into UCLA, SD, and Davis. However, my cc (SMC) has a good relationship with UCLA. You should also know that Berkeley does not “encourage” one year transfers since last year.

OP isnt even applying to berkeley (they left berk out of their schools list). major pre reqs do NOT have to be done before you apply, its just the more you have done, the better. yes on your app just say youre going to have them done. good luck on ucla!!

yeah, im personally biased against berkley. Im just really not a huge Norcal fan in general, SoCal is my home and I’d prefer to study here but hopefully travel around europe.

Anyway, the application says i have to have the basic Igetc and english courses done before the spring of application, does that mean they wont even consider my application is im taking my second english (speech class) this semester. Or do they mean that is has to be done before the fall of enrollment, thats definitely managable.

I’ve also heard that engineering or science majors have different req’s and dont Have to do the igetc, is this true? Cause then I just feel stupid for wasting my time with all those ge’s that werent needed, rather than math and science courses that im doing now

and poly sci req’s dont even come close to the amount of classes for chem, which has pre-req after pre-req for every class (so annoying). The only problem is that I’m so below on math that I cant even take physics till calc

you should prolly figure out your major ASAP since youre a one year transfer

yeah thats what i’m trying to do, haha I have until november 30th, either way it will be something in the sciences. Right now I’m just trying to weigh the pro’s and cons for each major. I know pharmacy makes good money, but I dont want to be behind a cubicle, or passing out pills for the rest of my life. I really want a job that involves traveling and science and is well payed. I Love traveling, and love languages and cultures. Im actually hoping that being fluent in english, french, and russian will give me a heads up in anything I decide to do. I also like chem. Hence the possible double major in chemE or chem material science and intl business. The problem is I dont actually know any people that do this, so i cant get a real understanding of how life is with these majors. My biggest nightmare is being behind a cubicle for the rest of my life.

So ideally i’d want a chem job with a lot of travelling involved, or to live in a big city ( like LA ) haha, that I would actually enjoy doing for the rest of my life. Something interesting that constantly has new developments and never the same old stuff. I have ADHD, I get bored easily. Pharm seems awesome when your in school, but I feel like as a profession it would get boring.

ever heard of the Doctors Without Borders thing? Should look into it, i think you’ll like it

Marusik62, you are not being realistic if you plan on majoring in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering and plan to take Physics next semester. You are currently taking pre-Calculus and Trigonometry (I always thought they were basically the same things) this semester. The majors you are interested in require that you take Calculus based Physics and Calculus I is a prerequisite and Calculus II is a co-requisite for Calculus based Physics I. Since you will not be able to finish Calculus I until the end of the Spring 2011 semester, the earliest you could take Physics I would be Summer 2011 if it is offered, otherwise it would be Fall 2011 before you could start Physics. Physics I, Physics II and Physics III have to taken consecutively, you can not take Physics I and Physics II at the same time. Therefore, you will not be able to finish your Physics prerequisites until the end of Spring 2012 at the earliest.

I do not believe you need to complete the Physics prerequisites before applying but you do have to convince the UCs you are applying to you will have them done by the time you transfer so I do not see how you can transfer to a UC with a major in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering before Fall 2012.

Ive been told that you dont have to finish your major req’s in order to transfer… then noone would transfer into chem because unless you were taking all your ge’s during high school (which I did) , theres absolutely NO WAY youd be able to finish all the chem requirements in even 2 years. Theres 3 physics pre reqs, 5 chem req’s , and 3-4 calculuses (i dont remember). Who could possibly finish all of those in 4 semesters and get theres IGETC done also?

anyways, I guess I’ll still apply and worst case scenario I dont get in , i’ll unfortunately spend another year at CC  and then apply again after finishing all the physics and stuff.

Actually I think at my school, calc is a corequisite for physics so I owuld be able to take them concurrently, therefore finishing calc based phys 1 by spring 11

Hey dude,

I am like in the exact same shoes as yourself, except i am a business econ major and want to go to Cal. I am totally scared tho because i took calc right now and feel like a B would drastically lower my chances of getting in :/. (what do you guys think?)

anyways have you considered applying for an easy major an then just doubling up majors once you get to the college of your choice?
