One Year Transfers Guide

I've been seeing a lot of people interested in transferring in one year. I would like to consolidate all those threads to one thread so people can give their experiences, advice, or questions; so we don't have endless threads on these topics that go unanswered.

To transfer in one year, you need the basic requirements completed.

That is 60 semester units or 90 quarter units at the end of spring semester or quarter.

Also you need to complete the minimum transfer eligibility courses, or if you complete IGETC, these could be completed in the process.

Transferring can be done at a community college or at a UC.
Typically, UCs give preference to community college applicants from my understanding.

Use the Assist website to check your major prereqs and complete them as soon as possible. To be a competitive applicant you need to have most or all major courses completed to have a strong application.

Feel free to add on anything I missed. Also, it is greatly appreciated if one year transfers who already transferred could give tips on their experiences and what to expect.

Side Question: I wanted to ask if anyone who transferred thought it was awkward transferring earlier or being a year younger than other transfers?

Also if transferring in one year, please get in addition to major courses, english and math courses out of the way as I've gathered that these courses are also looked heavily upon.

Hey.. i've applied to transfer in winter 09 in 1.5 years(from 2007 summer to fall 08). My major is Mechanical Engineering. I'll finish all the major requirements as well as the required GE's for an engineering major by the end of this fall.

So, for an engineering major, it is definitely possible to transfer in 6 semesters even without any AP credits provided that you are eligible to take college level transferable courses in math, english and chemistry. But, to transfer in a year, it is very difficult for engineering aspirants unless u have AP credits.
1.) Finish all the major prerequisites listed in assist.
2.) Engineers don't have to satisfy IGETC, so for GE's, you need to complete 1 course each in arts, humanities, social and biological sciences.

thing i worried about is that i have heard if i apply for fall , i have to finish 2 classes of enlgish before the spring that i have to transfer . Basically i get summer and fall to finish the english components. Is that really true? or just looks better than taking it during spring(the last semester that counts b4 trasferring)?

Hey Jiniyz

From my understanding, for UC's, you do need 2 semesters of english. But they never said anything about finishing before spring.

I don't think it matters much if you finish it before spring or not. For one year transfers, finishing 2 semesters of english is hard, especially when they require specifically you finish the english composition and critical thinking. Usually, at least at my CC, the english composition is a pre-req to get into the critical thinking class.

Oh, I also want to transfer out of my CC in one year. The down side is that my CC limits me to a max number of units I can take each semester/intersession. Even if I take the max number of units possible, I cannot possibly fulfill the 60 units! But I'm lucky I have AP credits!

Anyway, does anyone know anything about the IGETC foreign language? I actually completed 5 years of foreign language in HS so it should waive the requirement for IGETC. However, I want to take additional classes at another CC to make up the difference in units and I couldn't possibly think of an easier class to take than a foreign language class. So I want to take the classes(in theory) again. Would that look bad? Or should I just suck it up and take another foreign language other than the one I studied in high school?

hi allisonn :]

Did you already have them waive your foreign language requirement? If not, then any schools that you're applying to (with the exception of, for you, USC) will not know that you fulfilled your language requirement in HS because they won't ask for the transcripts.

And also, UCLA and UCB require that you finish the IGETC before transferring in. This means two semesters of English comp, no matter what.

i took composition during summer and taking critical this fall. so I think ill be ok . I was worried cuz few days ago i dropped my critical class because of my work . But found a short term class starting around next week .

In my case, i took care of foreign language w SAT2 . Unless you got the units with foreign language AP test, i think it will be fine to retake it . especailly because it is junior transfer the won't look at your high school transcript .

hey grey_syntactics

yeah, I talked to the counselors/records office people about it but then I decided that I want to take it again for the easy A. Lol thanks for the help!

jiniyz,

I took the SAT2 as well for the foreign language and got 770 on it. I didn't know that would waive the requirement! thanks for the info.

so if we finish the Igetc by the spring before we transfer we can apply to UCLA? what if you don't have all your major stuff done? assist doesn't list anything for my major at UCLA. i guess they want everything to be done at their school.

this is my first year at CC and i'm gonna be able to finish the IGETC by spring 09 . so should i apply? also i got AP credits but i don't know how those will be used.

You have to get the igetc and 60 units done. Pre-reqs also... what major are you looking at?

grey_syntactics--

film or theater at UCLA

Not to get you down or anything, but I'd be prepared to get disappointed.

sleeper--

well i don't really know what else i'm supposed to do besides doing the IGETC. that's why i'm asking

if there is nothing on assist.org, then either look deep into the website for the info, or contact someone from the department at UCLA directly.

I think you mean to transfer as a Junior (after two years in a community college/university), you would have to have 60 units completed by the end of spring semester/quarter. So if you were in a community college with the semester system, you'd have to take 15 units worth of college-transferable courses, totaling it to 30 units after two semesters and 60 units in 4 semesters. This isn't including summer classes, of course.

That was random...
