I go to a very rural high school with only about 400 students. Because of this, my school offers a grand total of 0 AP classes. However, they do allow some students, one of which being me, to take online AP classes on Illinois Virtual School (IVS). Next year, my Sophomore year, I’m going to be taking AP Biology online. I’m just wondering, what are online AP classes like? Are they usually of decent quality? Will I have the resources to get a 5 on the exam? Will I have access to help for homework? Any details would be greatly appreciated.
I’m in the same vote pretty much. My school offers a small handful of AP courses but not many at all. I’m taking AP Psych and Literature online next year. Don’t have any experience with them but just here saying you’re not alone!!
I’m just wondering how the lab classes (Bio, Chem, Physics) would work. Would you have to supply your own microscope, for example?
Are you ready for AP Biology? Usually, you need to have taken a (preferably) Honors biology course and a (preferably) Honors chemistry course before taking on the challenge of AP Biology. Some schools, like mine, allow you to concurrently take AP Bio with Honors chemistry if you’re a strong student.
I haven’t taken any chemistry yet. From what I’ve been told the chemistry in AP Bio is very basic. I think I’ve learned enough chem from Honors Bio and 8th grade to be just fine.
@MemeDealer21, @itachasuke is correct…Honors Chem before AP Bio is advisable, and I think the College Boards says one should take both HS biology and HS chemistry before AP Biology. The AP lab sciences are tough. (From the State of Maine’s online AP course center: “Prerequisites: Students should have successfully completed high school courses in biology and chemistry.”)
Well, I’m definitely up for it. AP Bio will likely be my only hard class next year other than maybe honors English, but probably not even that. Is there anyone that has actually taken AP Bio that could tell me if I NEED chemistry? I’ve been told that the chemistry is very basic but I’m starting to have doubts. Right now my school doesn’t have honors chem, they’ll have it my junior year, and they moved honors biology kids last year to regular physics which I don’t want to take, so this seems like the next best thing. Besides, I understand that it isn’t uncommon for sophomores to take AP Bio.
P.S. We’re kind of off topic here. I made this post to figure out what online AP classes are like.
I personally didn’t need really any chemistry for AP Bio, other than OIL RIG (oxidation is losing, reduction is gaining) and some thermo. YMMV.
