How do you explain extenuating circumstances for your GPA (like a family member died, etc.) on any online applications?

the part where it says "additional information" or "supplemental information"

If you've had a lot of things going on in your life other than school and ecs (ie family stuff), how do you phrase an 'explanation' in the additional information section without sounding like you're trying to use it as a long, drawn-out excuse for something? Is it better not to say anything? I don't know, I've been really involved in activities and I've gotten pretty good grades, but I've dealt with a lot of things during my high school years and I think that getting through everything has really changed me as a person, in a good way. I'm touching on it in my essay but there's so much to it, and there's also so much I want to say about things like my ecs, which I feel very strongly about.

I want the admissions officers to really see who I am, but I feel like there just isn't enough space to cover everything.
