Online APs

I had no idea APs are offered online. I found this cool site called Apex Learning Subjects and was thinking of doing AP Psych and maybe even AP French. This would probably be a good alternative to my community college classes. Has anyone done online APs before? What's the level of difficulty? Are the classes still taken seriously since they're online?

I didn't know they offered APs online either. I checked out the site and it seems pretty interesting. I'm gonna ask my guidance counselor and see if she's heard of it and if it's legit. I believe it will help me out with my AP Biology class. If it's what it says it is, I might take a couple other courses as well. Sorry I couldn't help, but thanks for the idea.

Haha, no problem. My principal had heard of it...I guess Apex is pretty well known.

I'm taking AP Biology too!

Apex is known.

How much are the courses?

I don't know how much the courses are. You have to call to find out. That seems pretty suspicious to me, kinda like how the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth offers APs for around $1500. Anyone want to call and check?

Yeah, you either call or email. That thing about John Hopkins is actually sort of funny...in a sad sort of way. But since my school is listed as one who participates, I'm not really worried. I did call to find out how much the courses run but got an answering machine. Hopefully they'll get back to me.

I found out it's $350 per semester. Kind of expensive. Plus for psych, I need to purchase the book, which is $100.

Sweet! So I can learn if I'm rich enough? Awesome. I would consider asking my school to pay for it, because we don't offer some of the Apex AP subjects, but our class sizes are going through the roof and that would just be wrong.

I hope my dad pays for it. He didn't think it would be that much. So French is $700 and Psych comes out to $450. Don't know if that'll go well with him. I'll see.

Sucks we are actually getting Psych. AFTER I graduate. :p

If you live in Florida, you can sign up on FLVS. AP classes are free. You have to pay for the test though.

JHU CTY courses aren't 1500 dollars. I'm doing Calc AB (self paced) right now, and it cost about $600 including the application fee.

I've heard of FLVS but I'm in PA. If JHU is $600 per class maybe I'll check it out.

Okay, yeah, I was wrong about that theoneo:
Application Fee (nonrefundable): $42

"Math, science, or computer science tuition:
Students may choose to enroll for 3 or 6 months
$570 for 3 months
$1080 for 6 months"

AP courses are different, though, because they aren't self paced (math, science, and comp sci are self paced). You have to follow a schedule as if you were really in a class. I can't seem to find the price though.

The two exceptions to the AP courses are Calc AB and BC. Since they're math, they are self paced, so you pay for either three or six months of enrollment (you can pay for an extra month at the end if you need it). I'm doing Calc AB right now - it's pretty good. They provide lectures by college professors on each topic, a binder of notes for all the lectures (for quick reference), followed by exercises, and then chapter tests.

wow u people are so rich... i cant believe youre paying that much money for one class... im self-studying and its freeeeeeeeeee

Haha, good for you. My school is paying for it.

how do I check if my school participates on their website? i dont see a link for the list..

so i am just double-triple-checking to make sure I understand correctly.

If I buy an AP Art History book and then read it every night, and then I just take the art history exam, it is considered the same as me taking an AP offered at my school? Same with the online course thing?

If that is all correct then the only crappy thing about studying yourself is that you have to take the test to show that you have been self-studying and that the AP won't improve your GPA?

Don't forget the cash you have to shell out.

They're almost considered the same things. In my opinion, self studying looks better.

However, what if you dont get a good score on the AP exam? then it would look bad right?
