online chemistry class

A adult friend of mine is looking for an online Fund-Gen Organic & Biol Chem course. She is applying to acupuncture school and it is a prereq. She was shut out of the class at our local CC. She thought she might be able to find an online class. Any ideas?

This one is generally not offered online because of the difficulty of running a credible online chemistry lab. You will see some Intro Chem online classes, which is generally the prerequisite for the course you are mentioning. Even then, some of the online labs are a not nearly up to the quality and learning experience that one would receive from a ‘real’ lab.

At my CC, this course is only offered once per year, so it becomes somewhat problematic for students who need it for entry into various Health Science programs. We try to stagger when it is offered, relative to nearby CCs, and that has been somewhat successful.

Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks Alf I will pass it on. She kind of figured it was a long shot.

I found this online organic chemistry class.

I would think that for acupuncture school, a lab class might not be necessary.

ellemenope- thanks I will pass that one along. I don’t think it needs to have a lab.

Those aren’t the courses that were asked about. That is a Junior-level year-long Organic Chemistry sequence that has a year-long General Chemistry sequence as the prerequisite. If you want to go through OSU, you want Chem 130:

You should check carefully to see whether or not a lab component is required at the acupuncture school in question.

What does “Fund-Gen Organic & Biol Chem” mean? Is it general chemistry? Organic chemistry? Two mints in one?

Fund-Gen Organic & Biol Chem just intro chem/biol plus org class for gen ed peeps. Thought was obv!

There are two chemistry ‘tracks’:

“Majors-level Chemistry” involves taking a year-long course sequence, and is usually referred to as, ‘General Chemistry’. That would be followed by a year-long course in Organic Chemistry.

“Health Science Chemistry” is a 2- or 3-semester sequence that starts out with an introductory course called something like, ‘Fundamentals of Chemistry’. This is normally followed by something like, ‘Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry’. Students commonly confuse this one course with the much more rigorous year-long Organic Chemistry sequence. I have heard Chem profs or Chem majors somewhat derisively refer to the Fundamentals course as, ‘Baby O-Chem’. While not very nice, it allows them to distinguish between the two O-Chems that tend to be offered to undergrads.

Alf- thank you for your description.Your description pretty much describes what the course offerings look like at the local CC. Lots of sections of more rigorous Chem classes but only one section of the Fundamentals of O chem and Biochem. She has her interview tomorrow for the school and I will suggest that she clarify if she needs a lab. Some of the acupunture programs she is looking at offer the Chemistry class as part of their program. One of the programs requires you to have all your science prereqs done before enrolling. Of course the one that requires it to be done beforehand is her first choice.

There is actually a third chemistry track–the pre-med/science grad school track which includes a year long general chemistry course and a year long organic chemistry course with a separate lab course for each of the two subjects. It’s not as hard as the chemistry that the chem majors take, but it is plenty difficult.
