Hi Guys, I'm a HS Senior ready to go to CC and transfer to a UC. I've been thinking about maybe doing one or possibly two online classes to finish my arts and humanities section for IGETC. I'm planning to maybe take these classes during my High School Spring Semester. Would I have to coordinate online classes with my CC, or can I just look for an online college (if i can just do it independently, can you refer me to any good online schools?). I would appreciate some help or ANY advice on Online Classes, how hard are they? If you study the material they give is that enough to get you an A? Etc.

If you are enrolled in a California CC, yes, you can take one or two online (or classroom-based) classes at other CCs. You do not need to coordinate with your main CC. Your main CC does not need to know, nor do they care, if you’re taking courses at another CC. I have done this, and it’s a great way to complete sections of IGETC when your main CC doesn’t offer exactly what you want or a specific class is already full, etc.

However, make sure that wherever you decide to take online classes is a California CC, not just some random school out of state or an online-only private school. The reason for this should be obvious-- IGETC certification. Only California CCs are a guarantee for getting credits that fulfill IGETC (you can fulfill IGETC with OOS/private school credits, but it can be a hassle and there’s no guarantee they’ll count).

I’ve taken a few online courses, and in my experience, just like with traditional classes, there is a huge range when it comes to quality and difficulty. There have been online classes that were a complete joke and required very little effort to get an A, while others have been just as challenging and time-consuming as a harder traditional class. As with traditional classroom classes, it just depends on the professor and the material.

Some things to note:

-I’ve only taken one online course at a time at a CC other than my main CC, so I’m not sure if there’s a credit limit (such as if you’re taking more credits at the secondary CC than the main CC).
-Your main CC will eventually be certifying your IGETC, so they will need official transcripts from all other CCs you attend prior to transfer.
-If you take a class that has pre-requisites at another CC (online or otherwise) that you completed at your main CC, you have to prove this to them, meaning they need to see your transcript. The CCs don’t automatically share student information or transcripts.
-As for being in high school while taking courses at a CC, I know nothing about that. I don’t see why it would be a problem, but I don’t know for sure so you’ll probably want to double check with a counselor at a CC.

I hope this makes sense and is somewhat helpful. Good luck!

Wow, thanks for the very informative response, you’ve definetely answer my question and my future questions I was about to have as well. Thanks @jaysef
