Online Courses at UW?

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of thoughts about online classes at UW. Because I commute like 1-2 hours everyday I think taking some online classes will help me a bit. Are the online versions just as good as the regular versions? I'm thinking of taking Stat 311 (for my major), Ling 200 (VLPA, I&S, QSR credit) online.

Thanks.

I’ve taken online courses from the UW (as well as from other places). If you’re the kind of person who learns well from reading the material and don’t need a lot of back-and-forth with the professor, then it’s a great way to earn credits. Since they grant the same amount of credit to the online courses as they do to their in-person courses, I assume that means that the people who really know – the professors – consider online courses comparable in quality. I’ve taken online courses in literature, history, French, anthropology, and math. Math was difficult for me to take online because it’s not an area of strength for me and it would have been helpful for me to see someone going through the steps of different kinds of problems. I managed to pull off an A- but I had to work very hard for it (and it wasn’t like it was advanced math, either).

I’ve only taken online classes w/the community college I attended, but I love them. Some people I know hate them.

It really depends on your personality. If you’re really motivated and self-directed…online is great. If you need hand holding, don’t bother
