Online courses?

alright so i need to take a math class as a prerequisite for my major called business calculus. problem is my school doesnt offer that and now im looking for a place where i could take it online. Any suggestions? It needs to be UC transferable.

Math generally can’t be taken online .

^^^Wrong. I’ve taken 4 classes online. They’re readily available. Try Coastline Community College. They offer Math C140: Business Calculus. Take it with Fred Feldon. He’s awesome! Midterm and Final are on-campus if you don’t live too far away, but you may be able to make arrangements to take the exams with a proctor wherever you live.

It depends on the actual math class . Like Finite math or anything where you actually have to figure out an equation can’t be taken online, since you could just google how to figure out an annuity, ect .

I am not sure about this at all but maybe you can take it through some UC Extension program?

@larinaga

A quick google search and I found a thread you wrote about how that same class doesn’t articulate to a UC math class .
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1377897-ucsc-econ-transferable-math.html</a>
Like I said, math generally can’t be taken online .
Sure they might count it as something else, maybe an elective business class .

@ thisislife - Coastline’s Math C140 is a UC-transferable Math class at all UCs. Whether or not they accept it as a pre-req for Econ or whatever major varies for each campus. UCSB and UCD accept it as a pre-req for Econ/Econ and Accounting. Regardless, it’ll be accepted as a transferable Math class.

@larinaga , the point is theirs a very real risk it work be accepted as a pre-req at the op’s school .

Think how much it would suck to take the class online and find out it actually doesn’t fullfil the prereq .

@ thisislife - Except we don’t know what the OP’s major is, nor do we know which UC he’s applying to, or if he’s already at a UC. Just because a class is taken online doesn’t devalue it in any way.

Assuming he’s a CC student applying for transfer: He needs to take a Business Calc class for his major. I simply suggested he look into Coastline Community College as they do offer Business Calc online. He’ll then have to do his own research on Assist.org to figure out if his UC of choice accepts that specific class taken at Coastline (or any other CC for that matter) for his major. That’s all I’m saying. It’s as simple as looking at the articulation agreements.

There are lots of UC extension online math classes you could take. Not only would it be guaranteed to be transferable, but it would also appear on your final UC transcript (which could help you with honors and other GPA things after you transfer).

shannon–wouldnt those clases cost a lot? how much usually?

@larinaga:
You’ve attended Coastline? Me too, I love that school…it changed my life.

Yup! I love it! I’m taking my Stats class online there this semester. They have awesome professors! Which classes did you take there?

larinaga–do you think it would be hard for me to get into that class if im a first time student with no previous units?

You might be able to snag up one of the remaining spots, or you can get on the waitlist. My first semester there was Fall 2011 with no previous units from Coastline and I was able to enroll into a popular online College Algebra class without being on the waitlist. It’s worth a shot.

Do they offer a spring semester?

Absolutely. I took Business Calc in Spring.

My math class through UCB extension was $600 and since it was all online, I didn’t need to purchase a textbook. I think it’s worth the extra $400 since its self paced, readily available, and fully transferable (it’s on your UC transcript). Maybe not all classes are worth this cost but if you need your English or math class and can’t register for one at your local CCC, I highly recommend UC extension.

@larinaga:

Awesome! My story is complicated, but when I went back to school, I went to Coastline and I’ve taken way over 60 units! I originally went to the paralegal program, I graduated, but decided I wanted to go to a 4 year. I took Stats at IVC. Paralegal course units didn’t transfer, and I also had to work my way up to stats from Algebra. Picking up 2 extra AA’s this semester, woulda been 3 but I got AR. I was lucky a counselor told me out of the blue during an appt about my ability to get extra AA’s on what courses I had already taken! The counselors there are amazing! Have you made a counseling appt there?

so coastline said all i have to do is fill our a proctor application and they would send the tests to my CC! thats awesome. so another question, is it a complicated course to learn online? How did you do?
