Online courses?

So I'm a rising sophmore, and am planning to start an online course later this month. It's a songwriting course, offered by Berklee, on Coursera.... I'm planning to double-degree, one in some form of musical composition.

Will colleges care if I took this course? I don't know if i can put it on my college app (if you do anyways) because the free course doesn't offer any form of verification. If i pay $50 I'll get a certificate of verification, but is it worth it? I really just want to take this class for my own sake but if the verification is useful/important then i may pay...

thanks!

I’ve taken several Coursera classes, and I don’t think it’s worth it to get a verified certificate, personally. I had my GC mention the courses I’d taken in my recommendation and my school also put a note on my transcript mentioning that I had taken these courses. If neither of those are possible, the Common App gives you a section to list activities and a section to provide additional information - either of these would work. You may also be able to list them under the “classes” section as 0-credit classes, but you’d have to make sure that the colleges will know that it’s something you took online, not through your high school.

Coursera is awesome and I hope you have fun with your course :D
