Online language courses for credit?

Does anyone have experience taking an online foreign language course for college credit while in college? DD is interested in finding a program in Russian not just to check a box, but to actually start learning the language, which isn't offered at her LAC. Thanks.

Many colleges will be able to work out arrangements with other colleges that do offer the language. For instance, Goucher students are able to take Japanese at near by Johns Hopkins or Chinese at Towson University. So first have her check with her LAC to make sure that there isn’t a college that has this kind of agreement near by.

Many Community Colleges have online language classes, so check out all your local cc’s. If they don’t offer the online during semesters then your D could at least start russian during the summer then transfer the credits(?).

Austin CC offers Russian.

Thanks, jkiwmom – the LAC’s handbook does mention making arrangements for other languages, but doesn’t mention any specifics. I thought about ACC, but they only offer Russian during the school year, not in the summers, and the CC local to the LAC doesn’t offer it at all. Her school might already have an avenue for Russian, but I thought I’d see if anyone knew of any solid online programs just in case.

For summer languages for college students, the big name is Middlebury’s Language School.

Many LACs won’t accept credits from another school whether online or not. For instance, my D took a summer course locally between her freshman and sophomore years but had to obtain approval from her school first for that specific course. Some schools will not accept credit from any other school so check first to obtain approval from her current school.
