online masters worth anything?

There are too many reputable “brick and mortar” schools offering MBA’s online at comparable cost to take the chance on a school like UoP or any for-profit university.

Has anyone heard of or attended to University of Maryland University College? I’ve been thinking of getting a Master’s degree in Environmental Managment but not sure of it’s quality of teaching. Thanks!

UMUC specializes in non-trad education. they are found at many (most) military bases overseas and are fairly well respected- not as well as UMCP. They are part of the university of maryland system and actually began as part as UMCP (main campus). the school is fine and REGIONALLY accredited. one caution though, some programs that have programmatic accreditation like business (AACSB) have different accrediting bodies than the main campus programs.

This is quite ironic. onlinestdnt is obviously a representative from that university trying to promote his very questionable school.

I would agree with this, that it really depends on where you get the degree. It is always helpful to be an alumni of a school that others in your area have attended as well, helping your chances on finding a job in your field. Some schools have national recognition. I attended a really affordable college in MI and was satisfied with the classes for the most part but I think that sometimes the fact that there aren’t many alumni from this school in my area and the school is not very well known does hurt my chances. The fact that it is also online does affect how I am perceived by employers. So the comment about attending a college that is unknown or that annoys employers with pop-ups does seem to be seems to be accurate. I have followed a thread on a discussion board on LinkedIn and have seen many people with online degrees having issues with finding a job in their field. Some are already in their field looking to get to the next level and want the quickest and easiest route to a degree which might hurt their chances to get to that next level.

Columbia doesn’t have online PhD. It has online masters (MS) and professional degree (PD) through distance education designed for working professionals.

How do you do PhD online? How do you conduct research away from the labs and offices on campus? There is a reason why a real university like Columbia does not offer PhD away from campus.
