Online Media Censorship

My school has a website for the daily newspaper. For each article they have a comments section.

One of the articles was about the athletic director urging fans to show up to games. I responded yesterday with criticism that the AD should have never been hired because of his extremely poor ethical conduct at his previous position. I did not use profanity.

When I went back to the same article today, my comment was deleted.

Is this legal? I assume it is, but I feel my right to freedom of speech as a student is being violated. I was planning on joining the paper someday, but I don't want to write for a paper that will pull such a stunt.

Go find and read the privacy policy/terms and conditions on the site. It depends on what they say.

Question--is the newspaper school-run or independent?

I agree with URichmaond2010, you need to check it out. It may or may be legal.

my understanding is that legally, if they censor or edit any comments, they can be held responsible for slander/defamation posted on their site; therefore, if it was felt that (there was any chance that) your comment might be seen as slanderous by anyone, they would be justified in removing your comment in order to protect themselves from litigation
