I have no doubt that one-on-one interaction with another person in the flesh is more effective, simply because it’s so much more practical. But I can understand how online is very convenient. I tutor one-on-one, and a close friend used online tutoring for her child. Her child had an insanely busy schedule and needed total flexibility, so she thought it was great, and any tutoring is better than none. Her child thought it was useful.
For me, it’s itmportant to be able to see a student in action. One of the things I do is watch a student work out problems in real time. We discuss material, questions, answers and strategies as we go. It’s easy to do that in person, but I can see how that would be impractical online. I need to see what a student has written, or what answer has been circled. What has been underlined, or how has the student organized an essay outline?
Online tutroing is probably cheaper, so that is a consideration.
Thank you for your response. How do you recommend to look for a tutor? Chains like Kaplan, Sylvan,…or craigslist?
I did the online College Board SAT prep when I was in high school. I took the SAT three times and raised my score 230 points (old SAT) between my first and last tests. My brother also did the online prep course and had similar success. If you are a good self-studier, I think the online course is a worthwhile investment.
