My mother got a woman to pay her bills and a new phone by paying the women half the amount and having the woman pay it in full. The first week (last week) everything went through and this week week she received all reverse charges meaning the charges didn’t go through. Basically a scam.
My dilemma is, I had an account balance of $1333 and I had the woman pay $1100 Friday of last week. I called my school and asked them if they received the payment they said yes and it has to go through settlement. I’m assuming the settlement was authorized and the payment was applied to my account but under “Pending Transaction”. Now the transaction is no longer pending and is just there. I called my school and told them my situation and they said the transaction was complete and I’ve been financially cleared.
My question is: Do I have anything to worry about since the transaction was complete although my mom was scammed/received reverse charges? Can a bank go back on its payment? How do debit card/credit card transactions work? If anyone understands my question please help answer it!
I would suggest your mom freeze her credit…and close her current bank accounts. And open new ones.
I’m not sure I understand your question and I’m sorry your family has been victimized. Your mom’s first phone call should be to the police who will refer her to someone at either the FBI or other law enforcement working on credit card fraud.
However, as best as I can understand your question- an illegal or unauthorized use of someone’s credit card, even if the transaction goes through, doesn’t mean that the third party (innocent here) gets to keep that money. Is that your question? Right now your account may show paid in full- once the bank works through the fraud, they are likely to get the money back from your college and you will owe it to them.
if this is not your question please clarify. And call the police. Why would you think that a scheme like this would be legit?
The payment was made with the woman’s card not my mothers so is there a possibility it could have actually went through?

You gave this woman money and she paid your bill? Why? In the future, pay your bill…yourselves! No middle man.
