I am a sophomore in precalculus and AP Statistics. Math comes easy to me, so I have been taking MIT OpenCourseWare Single-Variable Calculus on my own. This has gone well, and I expect to take the Calc BC exam this year and get a 5.
My high school does not offer math courses after Calc BC. What is the best way to take Post-AP math courses in a way that colleges will recognize? Would my school give me credit if I continued MIT OCW? If not, are there other programs that would likely be accepted?
You could try CTYonline or online college classes. I don’t think your your school would give you credit for OCW but it wouldn’t hurt to ask!
Can you take classes at a local college?
To take classes at a local college, the transportation time and schedule wouldn’t work out. It seems to mainly be a choice between Stanford pre-collegiate and CTY online. Does anyone know which is better and why?
I don’t think you would get college credit for either, unless you obtained it indirectly by taking a placement exam at your university.
@willw12 I took Alg. 2 over the summer through CTY. They used recorded video that somebody else created (Professor Burger, I’m sure you have watched some of him). The problems that were given for homework did not always match up with the videos and it seemed like homework and tests were made first and then they went out and searched for a video series that would cover close to what they wanted us to learn. The teacher was helpful if you reached out to her, but it normally took a day or two for her to respond. If you are not a good test taker, CTY is not right for you. The grade was 25% midterm and 30% final. Obviously, this is a common high school course, so I don’t know if the experience would be any different for a college level course.
