Online Professor Recommendation

Will colleges accept a recommendation from a professor that taught an online course? The professor is affiliated with the university which is how I took the online/icourse. The professor also teaches other classes on-campus as well. I frequently asked questions through the online discussion boards and had conferences over the phone so I am familiar with the professor.

Now I’m not sure if the Professor is going to write that you connected over an online course, but it will be a nice touch with your other recommendations. Certainly not a deciding factor, though. If you have better, more personal ones, like a professor you did research with, it will have more weight.

Your recs should be from your high school teachers who know you well and know who you are in your community.

@ProfessorMom1 To be fair there are sections on the application which allow you to submit external recommendations, in addition to High School teachers

Sorry, this was meant for the “transfer students” discussion page. I will still keep this in mind and use this as an additional rec. with my other recommendations!

@pandawang16 Yes, but in my opinion the main recs should be from classroom teachers (I did not realize this was a transfer app incidentally). There is a section for extra recs on some applications and this would be fine for that. However, many admissions reps caution against submitting too many extraneous letters and info. As a faculty member who serves on admissions committees (and decisions), I would not give an online professor’s letter much weight if the applicant could have gotten a letter from an actual classroom experience. If the student was only enrolled in online courses, then this sort of letter would be fine.
