online school & summer school is too expensive :(

looks like my summer is going to be spent playing games again. rip

Some places offer it free if your school accepts those credits. Also some programs will have the school cover the cost of it if you are not on track for graduation or you are not taking the total number of courses offered.

@singingwriting thing is, i’m not in hs yet. although i emailed the gc for my highschool, I won’t be able to take any classes over the summer or do online school because its really expensive rip. really wish my school and hs were in florida instead so i could use flvs

There are so many other things you could do during the summer, though, other than taking classes? You could get a job, you could volunteer, you could create your own project, you could go to a summer camp for hs students - check your local colleges for programs, you could be a camp counselor… the list goes on and on.

@elliebham the only summer camp in my area that I could go to was only available to 7th & 8th graders so I can’t go now :frowning:

Can you be a camp aide or counselor there? Is there anywhere nearby you could volunteer?

@elliebham it wasnt really a summer camp though. it was like a school with no credits where we learned about the ste in stem.

Come on, if you really want to learn there is nothing stopping you. Read books or find something on the internet–there’s tons of free material available.

Do all of Khan Academy. Start with K-2 math, and work from there. Seriously.

MIT has free classes on-line, enough said. If that is too hard, there are other programs, it won’t be too easy.

But really, if you are 14, there are other options like finding a camp to volunteer at, etc. Do something outdoors with people some days and go online and take MIT (or millions of other google-able options) courses the other days. Grab some good books from the library (Ask the librarian for their list of summer reading options, maybe a few classics … maybe at above your age level). Go ride your bike, run, sit outside in a chair, find friends somewhere (volunteer work) and have a nice summer.

Don’t play games all day …

@awesomepolyglot i already do khan academy

@pickone1 im not really looking to do classes for fun right now. im just looking to do classes for credit. i already do read but not as much as I did. school has ruined my interest for reading. apparently i can’t read the books I like because I have a high reading level? i can’t really go to a summer camp because again, lots of $$$. and none of my friends live in my neighborhood. rip

Why do you need credit? Are you trying to graduate from high school in 3 years? Do you have a major health issue that you anticipate will make it hard for you to be a full time high school student?

You can read anything you want over the summer. What does this have to do with required school reading?

You don’t actually sound that interested in school. Maybe it would be better to volunteer or find a job. You’re probably old enough to work or at least volunteer with summer youth activities-- I know kids your age working as soccer refs, swim team assistant coaches, dog walkers, baby sitters, etc.

@mathyone i don’t need the credit per se, i just want it so that I can have more academic freedom freshman year. volunteering isnt an option for me bc of my family & albeit my demeanor here, i really do care about school. but the reading thing, idk where I was going with that. i dont have any excuse for not reading over the summer. also again about the volunteering things, just bc you see some kids doing it, doesnt mean the circumstances permit for other kids to do it. i only inquired about summer school & online school because it was something that I CAN do. but hey, that’s my fault for posting something casual on cc. just got a bunch of people who are pretty considerate to factors in someones life and insist on posting needless spam lurking 24/7

sry for the rant

& grammar mistakes

You could take courses on Coursera or EdX and test out of school subjects, maybe.

I know at my school, if you are signed up for a class that you feel like you are already proficient in, you can take the final before school begins. If you get an 80% or higher, you get credit for the class and can either not take a class in that subject or move to the next class in that subject (my recommendation). Ask your GC what you can do. They will know the specifics about your school.

BYU has quality, relatively affordable courses online. They even have some AP selections.
