Online Summer Courses?

I don't know if this really fits with this particular forum, but I've been wondering if anyone knows of any good online summer courses. I would have loved to take classes @ BC or Brown this summer, but the tuition costs are ridiculous, especially if they expect me to dish out $50k/yr if I am enrolled for four years in the not too distant future... but anyways.

I think it'd be fun to take a class that I'm interested in without the pressure of it being AP or anything. There are a lot of random classes that I've read about that are just interesting to me... like the evolution of rock 'n' roll, various economics classes, sociology, Latin... and so many more.

So summer is the only time I have to pursue such a thing before college. I don't want to have a MAJOR commitment... with summer jobs, HW, SAT prep, and oh yeah... relaxation... but I would like to learn something interesting that shows that I learn for the sake of learning... not just to take an AP test or something.

Does anyone know of any sites I could check out for this? I'm sure if there are any, that they're already full for this summer... but I'm remaining hopeful!!

Gracias :)

I'm taking two online courses this summer.
One math course from CTY (Johns Hopkins) and one Robotic from CTD (Northwestern+Stanford). Just google it.
Both are great, so far.

Wow... pretty comprehensive list!
I'm having a little trouble with the website for some reason... can these courses be taken during the summer? In particular, this summer?

Hi- I had some trouble with the website about a week ago also (IU) but was able to get on yesterday. I know they are switching to Mozilla for the online stuff this month--in all these years we have never had trouble before. We have been customers of IU since about 2000, with my oldest. The customer service and tech support is awesome. My daughter tried one of the earlier online courses but she really liked having the syllabus (which is spiral bound) and you can check off the assignments and study it when you're not on the computer. With the online the assignments are submitted through a portal where you can save and correct, or "submit". The grades came back almost instantly, and then its OK to move on to the next one. I think if you have only one class this would be nice, but mine usually take 5-7, so they don't mind waiting as they then go to another subject. Assignments for regular courses are done by either mail, fax or email option is available. We have done all of them, but not too much on the email. The tests will come by mail so allow a few days for that. You also might look at the Undergrad courses, they carry regular IU credit and the prices are pretty good. Also LSU has good prices, and lots of different subjects compared to IU. I am doing Math and Spanish right now, and I like the math course.--But you are pretty much on your own. Also BYU has some other different variety, like Russian. We also use U. of Missouri. With U. of Missouri, you can get it done fast because its mainly multiple choice. My daughter uses them for math since you can rip through if that's what you want to do. IU is tops for quality, I would say, but the prices have been creeping up there. You get 12 months to do the course so you can work during vacations, I suppose. (we go all year round, but travel intermittantly) HTH

You can start a course when you want and finish any time in the next 12 months. (Kids at our HS find it easy to do health through IU over the summer.)

I think I might be in the same boat as blinkangel44. I'm in between my Junior and Senior years of high school, and I would love to take a Computer Science course this summer.
A few questions -
-Which online courses would look best on a college application?
-Would I still be able to get into a program this summer and complete it before college apps? (I am confident that if left to my own devices I would be able to compete a course in a month.)
-Where do you guys recommend taking courses that I would still be able to get into. (Is IU a good one?)

Online AP classes are particularly good to take during your sophomore or junior year if you can take the AP test at the end of your junior year.

My son is also interested in finding an online course for computer science where he can get an intro to Java or C++ but one where he can work at his own pace, preferably right now while there is still some time before school starts. How do you know what is reputable and what isn't?

can you do these courses just for advancement not for a credit or anything just like to do well in school this coming year?
or do you guys know another place where I can do Chem for a good background before i take the class at my school....it would be sick if it was free and keep in mind I don't want a credit for the class

If you do a Google search on the terms
open courseware chemistry
you can get powerpoint slides, lecture notes, and past exams, and you could try to study it on your own.
