Online summer registration for out-of-state students

I live in Virginia and have opted to have my summer registration completed online on the 8th of June (trying get it done early, haha). I haven't gotten any information from the university about how it's going to work, and it's in two days! Does anyone have any experience with it? I wouldn't want to miss my appointment or screw it up because of my ignorance, haha.

When you signed up for on-line registration you were supposed to sign up for an on-line advising appointment for on-line advising for the date you are registering. Did you get one? If not call and see what to do.

Otherwise, they are not going to be sending much of anything else. You need to do your own homework to prepare to register and you need to do that NOW and it will take some time. Go here to begin: <a href=“Course Explorer”>Course Explorer; Programs of Study leads you to your major and course requirements; Class Schedule leads you to when various courses are sceduled during the day; Course Catalog gives you descriptions of courses and prerequisites; General Education Requirements tells you the overall university gen ed requirements and provides courses that meet those requirements. Note, each college also has its own gen ed requirements sp check particular college you are in also.

Moreover, if you have not yet taken all necessary placement tests, you better complete them before Wednesday.

I got it now. It seems that when I picked my date for registration, the website saved the date but didn’t confirm my selection - hence why I didn’t get any notification. Stupid error on my part, but that’s taken care of now. I’ve done all the necessary pre-registration homework and placement tests a long time ago anyways, no worries.

I went with my son today for the college of engineering registration and was disappointed by the whole process. We were told one thing in the family presentation about hours, etc. and then my son, who was not allowed to have me present, per registration rules, was told a different story by a non-conversational adviser who ignored all of the course homework my son did and instead tried to force a heavy schedule on him - very inconsistent and nobody wants to answer the important questions. My son would have preferred my assistance but could not have it, so be prepared when you are talking to the adviser. My son’s experience reminded me of many years ago where I felt like I had a terrible first semester schedule because I did not get real life advise from someone who has been there, done that. Stick up for what you want if you are confident in it - after all, you are paying a boatload for the classes. Good luck! Sorry for the rant, but it should have been an easier day.

And remember that you will have until midnight of your registration day to fix or re-arrange your schedule to your liking and then you are locked in until 8/19.

Danjulieo - thank you for share your experience. We are OOS engineering too, we have to spend part of our summer vacation budget for this event, fly to UI and two nights for hotel. Do you think it’s really necessary to meet with the adviser for the course selection?

Mehappykid,

My understanding is that meeting with an adviser is required, but you might be able to do it online or via telephone if you are OOS. I would check with the university on that. You certainly can schedule classes from your computer at home on your advising date, after talking with an adviser, who then releases the university “hold” until midnight that day. That is what we were told. So, you may be able to save the travel expenses. Good luck!

Danjulieo, thank you for the heads up. I’m sorry to hear that it didn’t go as planned. I can see where not having any parental guidance allowed during the advising session could go wrong. I’ll be sure to be firm with my adviser.

mehappykid, I checked on the site where you can select the date for your registration program, and it looks like all the dates that had online advising available have already been taken. Summer registration is indeed mandatory, so it looks like you’ll have to make a trip to campus on the date you selected.

Oh, and if anyone was wondering why I haven’t made any comments about my registration experience yet, I actually signed up for the one tomorrow (the 9th). Wish me luck. x_x

On-line advising is not for every students. Not for out of state Engineering students!

We tried to schedule an on-line advising early May then found out it’s not for Engineering students. For engineering, only international can do on-line. I’m 100% sure about this, I called the office few times and talked to an adviser.

Only Engineering major!

How did it go?

Im doing online registration too!

seastar9, my registration date actually got pushed back to the 30th of June. Some mess up with my files or something… disappointing, I know. I’ll post how it goes afterwards. -__-
