Online Teacher Recs

So how exactly do online teacher recs work in general?

The common application school forms section says, "You must enter one Counselor (who will complete the Secondary School Report and other forms for you) and at least one Teacher (who will complete the Teacher Evaluation for you.) You may enter an unlimited number of teachers and assign them to any colleges you'd like, but only one Counselor may be invited...After saving, those school officials with email addresses will receive an email inviting them to send your recommendations online or via mail, whichever they prefer. If any of your school officials choose to mail their forms, you will need to return to this website to print paper forms for them to mail."

Do they upload the rec onto your account or something?/Do the teachers essentially have access to your common application account (username and password) after you invite them? Also, if I were to waive my right to access my recs, would I still be able to choose which teacher recs to send to which colleges? Or do teachers just email the college directly with your rec?

Thanks in advance

Eh good question. I’m kinda curious too. Anyone know?

sorry, im too lazy to link it, but if you go to the download forms page on the commonapp site, it gives you a demonstration of exactly what teachers and counselors see when theyre filling the form out. not sure if thats what youre asking, but go check that out.

When you invite a counselor or teacher (via adding him or her to the School Forms page in the Common App Online) he or she will receive an email ‘inviting’ them to complete the applicable school forms on your behalf. At that point, the teacher or counselor can do one of three things:

 1. Log into the online system and fill out the stuff online.
 2. Opt out of the online process and send paper forms. If this is done, you’ll be notified via the School Forms page of the online system. The School Forms page will make PDFs available for you to download and email or print out for your counselor or teacher.
 3. Decline your request. If this happens you’ll be notified via the School Forms page in the application and will have to remove that person from your list and add a different one.

If your counselor completes the forms online, they will have everything they need in the online system. They will NOT be able to read your application, nor will you be able to read their forms. The counselor submits each form one time and it gets automatically sent to every school to which you submit the Common App Online. Your counselor will be able to see which colleges you have on your My Colleges list, as well as the deadlines associated with the decision plan you’ve chosen. This will help him or her to know when the SSR is due and/or if the Early Decision Agreement needs to be completed.

If your teacher completes the forms online, he or she will only be able to see information about the colleges to which you have assigned that teacher. Each teacher will be asked to complete a simple form and upload a letter of recommendation. Once a particular teacher submits a recommendation for you in the Common App Online system, you can send that recommendation to any of your colleges, even those that you might add later in the season.

Important: No college will receive online school forms from your teachers and counselors until you actually submit the Common App Online. Not if you submit a paper app. Or any other app. Only the Common App Online.

If your counselor and teachers are open to it definitely encourage them to submit their stuff online. It saves them the cost of the postage and, more importantly, gives you and your counselor or teacher the ability to track each form so you can see if and when each college downloads it. Mail has a much higher likelihood of getting lost. The Common App Online does not lose your forms. The college can always go back to the Common App System and re-download your forms.

Ah, ok. That makes sense. Thank you!

How exactly do you invite the teachers? All I see is instructions to print the forms on the School Forms page.

Thank you.

PhotoOp -
The description I posted above is only for those applicants who attend high schools that use the Common App Online web forms. If your high school uses Naviance your counselors and teachers will submit their forms online to the Common App via Naviance. If you read the text at the top of the School Forms page, it should say,
“These school forms are available for completion electronically by your counselor through your school’s subscription to College Planner from Naviance…”

If you see that, you should go and speak with your counselor and teachers to see how they will be submitting the information. If they need paper forms, you can print them from that page.

Hope that helps…

It does help - thanks a bunch.
