It asks for AT LEAST 1 teacher rec... does that mean they prefer 1 or 2?

1 is fine...the only reason to do 2 would be to highlight something else about you (ie, have your coach/drama teacher/employer write a letter). if you don't feel that this is neccessary, and that one letter covers all you need covered, then one is fine.

do they allow a supplementary rec?
i want to get another one from my english mentor whom i have known since 9th grade

bump
do they allow supp recs?
if they do, in what form?
letterhead, or the teacher rec form provided by northwestern?

YES. They allow supplementary recs...I didn't mention sending in 2 above just for ****s and giggles.

I would make them as formal as possible, but I don't believe that there are any specific guidelines.

i realized that i accidentally gave my one teacher a northwestern envelope though i had given my other teacher the rec form. i'm guessing the one teacher will assume that he'll have to send in a rec with the common application. I think he already sent it, and what do you think northwestern will do? just throw it out since they'll get the other one with the real form?

wait, so the one teacher sent in a common app teacher rec form? i don't quite understand, but i would just call the office and let them know so they don't get confused when the wrong form comes.
