Well I live in Texas and I want to major in engineering. There's really only 3 schools in Texas that are great from engineering (or so I'm told)

UT, Rice, and A&M.

I'm auto admit to A&M, so I'm applying to UT as sort of a high match, and rice as a reach.

My SAT score is 1990, I'm in top 12%, I'm Mexican, and I have a ton of ECs.

What I'm asking is, are there any more schools I should apply to that would be affordable? My parents make a lot of money so I probably won't get much aid. Let me know where else would be good schools, or if I should only apply to those 3

When do you hear from A&M? If it’s early in the school year, then (although you don’t think there’s a reason) if you didn’t get in you’d have time to apply to others (depending on their deadlines) I’m assuming you’ve visited and like A&M enough?

I’m not familiar with how A&M’s engineering admission works, but if you’re auto admitted to its engineering program, you’re fine with going there, and can afford it, you don’t need any more schools.

I’m supposed to hear around 2 weeks after I apply (Next week). I haven’t visited any colleges, my parents have been too busy. (Or so they keep telling me)

Good!!! My kids toured several schools, for the first time, as admitted students. I can tell you it’s very empowering to go on the tour and know you’re already ‘in’. Sounds like you are in a very admirable position ~

I thought auto-admit for A&M was top ten percent? Also, be careful, as auto-admit in to a top Texas school does not equal auto-admit in to the major you want. Engineering usually is more competitive.

If that’s the case, then apply to Texas Tech. You might also want to consider the university of Oklahoma as it may give you enough merit to bring the CoA down to instate Texas A&M levels. Although A&M’s engineering is better than OU’s, OU is probably superior to TT, especially if you get into the honors college.

I’m auto admit because of my day scores. And my counselor told me as long as I apply before December I shouldn’t have a problem getting engineering

Applicants who are Texas residents or who are enrolled in recognized public or private high schools in Texas with a rank in the top 50% of their high school graduating class, achieve a 1300 SAT or 30 ACT and meet minimum course work will be automatically admitted to Texas A&M University, but not necessarily to the major of choice. These applicants must submit all required credentials by the closing date to qualify for automatic admission.

Have your parents said that they’ll pay all costs? I know that you said that they have a good income, but have they said how much they’ll pay?

If you don’t need a financial safety then fine. However, if you do, for your GPA and M+CR, Alabama would give you free tuition plus 2500 per year for eng’g…

But, if you’ve got TAMU sewed up acceptance and financially, it sounds like you’re set.

I probably wouldn’t attend rice either way, I just wanted to see if I’d get accepted. My real goal is UT but who knows. I’d be happy with A&M. How is AU with Engineering?

If you know you are in so early then there is no problem applying to only those schools. Many people who get into their first choice ED or rolling don’t put in many applications. But, I would try to visit the school before December so you are sure you feel comfortable there.

Alabama has a fine College of Engineering…all disciplines are ABET accredited. The campus is GORGEOUS!

Bama has a brand new Science and Eng’g Complex.
Here’s a video and pics about the school…
