Only accepted @ UCSD, NEED HELP!!

Hello all -

I have a slightly odd situation as a transfer student, but if you're willing to read, I genuinely appreciate it.

This is my 3rd year at community college. I was going to transfer last year. I was accepted at all the UCs (probably because I was in the Honors program) and intended to go to UCLA. Unfortunately, I took on way too much during my last semester and got a D in Statistics, so that killed my chances at UCLA and got me kicked out of the honors program.

So, still wanting to go to Berkeley with my friend who transferred there this Spring, I stayed at comm. college for another year (they only take apps for Fall @ Berk), retook the Stats course and got an A, and reapplied. At Berkeley, I applied as an English major, and at UCSD, a Lit/Writing major.

Earlier this month I was accepted at UCSD. And then, a week ago, I received tragic news that my friend who went to Berkeley this spring passed away of unknown causes in her off-campus apartment. And yesterday, I found out I was rejected from Berkeley.

I know that Berkeley is the #1 public university in the country for their English program, and my friend really was counting on me going there, but still, even if I had been admitted I feel like there's a sort of stigma attached to the campus since she died there that would make me feel really weird, if you know what I mean.

So, my only choice seems to be UCSD. But here's my excuse: UCSD is a very science-oriented school and I'm a little weary of their Literature department and how good it is. If anyone knows anything about the department, please share the details.

My other option is to go to CSU Northridge, a university close to my house where pretty much everyone from my comm. college goes when they transfer. But I really don't want to do that because it's just so lame, but their English program might not be so bad, maybe even better than UCSD, although that sounds weird to say.

So here's my main question: Should I go to UCSD and at least see how their Lit department is and then maybe transfer out if I don't like it? Or should I give CSUN a try? I am very, very confused right now & am not sure what to do. I really don't want to give up another year to wait to apply to UCLA or Berkeley again (and then probably get rejected again). I guess I'm just looking for a good school for English, so if anyone can help or has suggestions, please post or you can email me: ella.mac@hotmail.com

Thanks - Camille

Go to UCSD. Of all the majors in the world, English is the one where you can study it anywhere. You're going to find a much more stimulating environment at UCSD than CSUN.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend...that must be so unexpected and hard to deal with. Maybe it's really a blessing in disguise that you didn't get into Berkeley (neither did i...oh well)

Now onto your question...

I know what you mean about CSUN...I live around there, too and I have friends that go or have gone there and love it. CSUN has some excellent teachers, don't get me wrong, but you got in to the 3rd-ranked UC and while UCSD is known more for science, my research has shown that all of their programs are good. CSUN was my safety school and I was so glad that I got in to UCSD so I don't have to transfer to CSUN because as you said, it's just lame.

Have you visited both campuses? I say visit both campuses and get the vibe of the school...you never know if you'll like it until you've been there. UCSD has the transfer admit day on May 10, so I'm going to that (although I've already seen the campus...it's beautiful). Living so close, you've probably already seen a lot of CSUN, but if not, visit there, too...just in case.

So what CC do you go to? Pierce...Valley...Mission?

Hope I helped a little!

I also want to make the point that UCSD is getting more prestigious each year. A degree from UCSD is going to be more and more impressive as the years pass.

hey - thanks for your replies. they are very helpful in reminding me that UCSD is a UC and that it is very prestigious. your responses are definitely making me feel more confident about going to UCSD So Thanks!!

oh and Felicia - I go to Pierce. =]

I grew up in that area. Seriously, you will have so much regret if you just go from Pierce to CSUN. Even if it is much more of a challenge, socially and academically, you will be happier in the long run if you take the risk and go to UCSD. If, for whatever reason, you decide you don't like it, CSUN is ALWAYS waiting for you. It's not going anywhere. ;-)

Ucsd All The Way!

hi guys, i got in UCSD as Math major (my minor) and i m not interested in Math at all, so i guess i will go to UCSD and change my major internally, is it really hard to change from Math to Computer Engineering? AFAIK engineering majors at Jacob School of Engineering UCSD are impacted, so then should i have higher chance to change my major there, or just waste 1 more year at CC, finish prereq and reapply for CEngineering, please help me guys, thanks a lot.

My daughter had a very difficult time choosing between UCSD and UCB. They are both excellent schools with great (and VERY different) campuses. With your understandable misgivings about UCB, UCSD is a fabulous option. You've worked very hard for admission to a top school and succeeded; you should be proud of yourself. Congrats!

I'm sorry to hear about your friend passing away. I got into UCSD and have checked out the campus. It really is a beautiful area. I picked SB because of my major, but I think the entire La Hoya/San Diego California region is just a great place to be. As long as you picked the right college you should have an excellent education from a top university.

La Jolla ;)

Woops...my bad.. i meant La Jolla..=)
