My s has t-moblie, has to go outside his dorm to make a call. Not great if we really have to reach him. We can't switch our plan for a year without a penalty, plus I just heard a study which says AT&T (?the only service to work reliably on the campus) gives the worst service of all. Does anyone have other phone services that work? If he's in an apartment next year do other services work there?

Your son and my D must be the ones outside using their phone. We have T Mobile too. She says that every other carrier is spotty at best. She seems to think that here is an AT & T tower on campus.

AT&T has a cell tower on campus. Thus, AT&T phones work the best on campus. A few new cell towers were installed on campus that work on all carriers, but T-mobile (my carrier) is still quite poor. I am switching very soon. Verizon actually seems to work okay. Stanford students get a meager 5% discount with AT&T.

Anything off campus, including graduate housing, seems to work very well with T-mobile. Kind of odd, but rumor has it that the university and AT&T signed a contract a long time ago stipulating that AT&T would be the exclusive cell service on campus.

Not to mention Apple is just a hop, skip, and a jump away.

My verizon phone has 4 bars everywhere on campus.

My uncle had lent me a Sprint and the service was ok but not great. So I gave him back and got an AT&T during NSO and the guy at the AT&T booth said that apparently AT&T donates a bunch of money to Stanford football so there’s some contract between Stanford and AT&T whereby they would be the sole cell service provider. Although… sometimes in my room I use my AT&T phone and it breaks up a little. But it could possibly be the location of my room because I get a terrible wireless connection and have to use an ethernet cable in my room but when I’m elsewhere it’s super fast.

I’m happy to report that new towers are installed on campus (at least for T Mobile). I consistently get 5 bars around campus, in sharp contrast to getting none.

My dorm room is in an At&t dead zone. 1 bar max. It sucks.

It does seem that t mobile service improved somewhat 1/10 - I called my son & he was shocked that he could answer in his dorm room. He had bars! That said, since we are still cut off as we are taking as he walks thru campus.
