only FOUR classes????

Is there any way to take more than four classes at Penn freshman first semester? Or is taking four classes actually tough enough? Right now I feel like four classes are too few. I want to take at least five to get the most out of my money.

talk to your advisor to get a credit limit boost (i think it’s automatically 4.5 for freshmen in the college, so you’d want to bump to 5.5 or so)

I thought most people took 5…guess I was wrong

everyone in wharton, engineering, and nursing takes 5 right off the bat

it’s only the college that has some taking 4

hmm Ok gonna contact the advisor ASAP.

dude why can’t we take five classes first sem at the college?? is there even a reason?? why do others in the other schools get to take five courses first sem?? NOT FAIR.

You can take 5 courses. In most courses advisors give you permission. There is only marginal benefit from taking 4 classes vs 5 classes.

it might be because you don’t really need to take 5 if your program doesn’t require it

some college programs only require 32 credits

whereas engineering needs about 40, and joint / dual degree needs even more

Yep. The College is designed so that for most majors you only need to take four classes a semester for eight semesters to graduate. I also wanted to increase my credit limit so I could take five courses, but the thing is, if you aren’t planning to do a dual-degree program, taking five courses first semester adds stress on you that you just don’t need. A pretty common first semester schedule for someone interested in the humanities or social science is as follows: writing seminar, language class, ECON001, and a random class of interest; for someone interested in the sciences, replace ECON001 with MATH104 or MATH114 and replace random class of interest with BIOL101 (which is a 1.5 c.u. course, actually), CHEM101 or PHYS170.

yeah but I’m double majoring and minoring so I need to take as many classes as I can… hmm i emailed my advisor… she better let me take 5!!!

thank you chrisw for the info

don’t worry. i’m sure yr advisor will.

bumping to 5.5 is piece of cake. all they have to do is go onto the system and change it. no forms necessary. just ask your advisor and they will defenitely do it.

I should point out that because the College is designed for four courses a semester, it’s obscenely easy to double major. If I wanted to, I could, even after taking only four classes first semester of freshman year, graduate with a Political Science major (12 c.u.), a German major (12 c.u.) and a Legal Studies & History minor (8 c.u.) in only seven semesters. Yeah, bumping up to 5.5 courses is easy, but as I said, unless you’re going to do a dual-degree, which requires you to fulfill requirements in two schools, there is really no reason to take five courses first semester.

i think in the vagelos program you are required to take five a semester, too, if anyone’s wondering.

how can we find courses worth 0.5 credits??

Most music performance courses are 0.5 c.u. Look at the course timetable on the registrar’s website for other courses that are 0.5 c.u.

Labs are worth 0.5 credits.

There are courses in Wharton (tend to be MBA though) and some special topics CIS courses that are 0.5 credits, not that most college students would ever take those…

ambitious freshmen make me laugh. just wait til your spirits are destroyed by penn
