Only have two years of Foreign Language

Im took German I and II in freshman year. We didn’t have it this year, due to not enough people. Next year (senior year) german III is available, but doesn’t really fit my schedule. Am I required to take a foreign language in college?

(Three years of German and I just took the AP German exam last week--- I don't think the exam went too well but I've always gotten As in my German classes.)

"Am I required to take a foreign language in college?"

I don't think any college in the nation (or at least the vast majority) absolutely require their students to take a foreign language. Say if you're going to go into theatre with a minor in biology, I'm pretty sure a school isn't going to force you to fit in a foreign language course somewhere in your schedule. It only depends on your major-- I'm going into international relations, and my school requires knowledge of a for. lang.

"We didn't have it this year, due to not enough people."

Oh, sucks. :( But, you know, you could have taken Spanish or French or whatever other language is avaliable. Colleges like to see three consecutive years of (the same) foreign language. If there were budget cuts and you couldn't continue to a German III level class, they'll understand if you take Spanish I or French I instead, for example. It's not required, but it would be a good course of action to take three years of the same language, or three years of different languages as long as there were legitimate reasons (which you have, because your school had to cut a language program).

I don't know. If your other grades are really good, I don't believe a lack of a foreign language in your upperclass years would hurt you to a VERY large extent. It would be harder with the more higher-ranked colleges, though.

Most colleges (at least the ones I applied/accepted to) required two years of a foreign language, with three strongly recommended. Everyone knew FOUR would be best.

Best wishes!

So do you have two years or one year of the language? If you have two years, I think you'll be fine in terms of admissions. Ask your counselor to note on his recommendation form that you wanted to take German III after taking I and II but were unable to because the course did not make.

Colleges look at courses in five categories: math, science, English, social studies and foreign language. In the extremely selectively schools, it would hurt quite a bit if they don't see at least three years of a foreign language. They want to see four years. However, they do expect you to take it if you can't. As said, have your guidance counselor explain the situation, and you can also include a short note in your application along with the essay(s). These comments also apply to AP courses.
