Question about well-rounded college applications--I have heard that too strong an emphasis on math and science is not always ideal. However, is it okay if you add history in, to get more of a balance? My letters of recommendation, AP exams, and SAT Subject Tests will likely only be in those three areas. Do I need to consider adding English or foreign languages to the mix? Thanks!

In order to do what? To demonstrate that you are well-rounded? I assume you are taking English and a foreign language so it’s on your transcript. I assume you took the SAT so they have your verbal and writing scores. You don’t have to take APs or SAT IIs in those areas if you feel you are less strong in them. Most schools want 3 subject tests at most - and many only 2.

The reason some people may say an emphasis on math and science doesn’t make you well rounded is because there is a stigma that comes with these subjects. I am really into science but it’s not by just picking another course that makes me an all around person. You need to show that you are a leader (not necessarily by having 20 positions in clubs) if you are one, that you are committed to your passions, that you have social skills, and most importantly building on number two, that you HAVE passions. I love soccer and yet I love chemistry and physics just as much.
So get your passions across as much as possible. If you love math, science, and history, then by all means show that you are a math, science, and history buff.
Good luck.
