Only One School?

I only applied to one BS for next year.
Does that lower my chances? raise them?
Is there any good outcome of applying to only one school?

Did you tell Mercersburg that they are the only school to which you applied and if accepted, you will attend? Be certain that they know this.

This would not lower your chances. I have no idea whether or not it would raise your chances. If the school is especially sensitive to yield (% of accepted students who attend), then it might give your application a slight boost if you are the kind of applicant they want.

Good luck! I visited the Mercersburg campus once, and I think it is lovely. I especially liked the stained glass windows in the chapel.

Mburg, I don't mean to rain on your parade, I think this is a good question. I know of a couple of kids this year and some for next year who intend on applying to only one school. Parents and prospective students all believe the school is the right fit and no desire to look anywhere else. Some already have a sibling attending and reason for only applying to that one BS. If the school knows that they're the only one, does that help or considered not wise at all? I think the sibling issue plays a strong part in this decision process for both parents and BS but really how much and how much of a good idea to apply to only one?

to be honest, I think that there is really no question as to whether it raises or lowers your chances.

If you only apply to one boarding school -- your chances of being accepted into a boarding school are lower. I am not saying that your chances of being accepted into that particular school are lower -- just your overall chances of being accepted into a boariding school.

If you need financial aid, your chances are even lower that will receive the amount of aid you need and the acceptance.

However -- if only one school is a good fit and you have solid options at home, you don't want to waste your time and money applying to numerous schools that you wouldn't attend anyway.

As far as if it increases your chances at that one school, I would have to say no. I think D'yer had a great post on this a week or so ago. Schools are trying to put together a great class -- and your desire to attend isn't one of the factors that is generally considered. Many kids say that XXX is the only school they want to attend, when in reality they are saying this to multiple schools. There may be a few schools where the yield percentage is very important and so it might be a very slight tip -- but I would guess that this would be the case at only a few schools.

Your best strategy is to apply to a number of schools that you would be happy to attend -- making sure that at least one or two are safety schools (including financial safeties). for some kids, this might be six boarding schools and for other kids it might be one boarding school, two day schools and a public magnet.

I interpreted the question as whether or not it would raise or lower chances at Mercersburg. Is that what you meant mberg hopeful? Please clarify.

yess it is burb parent!

thanks guys

It would probably help a little if you told them you would definitely go if you were accepted and got enough FA, because it would increase their yield.

mburg you're from Gettysburg, did you get to apply for any of the scholarships? I know the Lenfest Scholarship is only for PA residents, so you should be eligible. I would definitely check on that.
