[</em>]Essays: Okay, here's the thing. This may be the one thing that made me stand out. I sent in the wrong word file for my essay (rough draft instead of final draft) and I felt TERRIBLE about it. So I finally sent them a long, long e-mail explaining my plight. It was very informal and very "me". I also sent in the real cop of my essay, which was a LOT better. I turned it around to be a real plus for me--if anyone's interested in the details, PM me. I don't think it's "copy"able, though. My essay at first was about how I was disappointed in myself for not being as good at performing (theatre, dance, singing) as I wanted to be; at the end of junior year, I had to give up my dream of becoming an actress--but I found a better dream, science. I explained the fact that I didn't have any research/national recognition in science/math because I had something BETTER--theatre experience, people experience, and LACK of science in my life that makes science so much better now. Sorry if that doesn't make sense.
[<em>]Teacher Recs: These are the other thing I think may have put me over the top. My humanities rec was 6-pages long, filled with direct qoutes from me (she asks everybody who wants a letter from her to write 5 adjectives that describe yourself, then approximately a page each explaining that). My other teacher's essay was, in her words, "Fantastic! They should let you in with THIS recommendation!" I didn't get to read that one.... but I think she probably checked "Top few" for at least one box. I know my English teacher check "Top few" for all boxes (which surprised the HELL out of me).

Essay: I wrote about a cipher I once cracked. It was pretty cool; the plaintext was an Einstein quote about the mysterious, and I tied the whole thing together with the quote. I talked about the procedure and my reflections. Since I wrote this paper originally for my AP English Lit class, and my teacher with an Oxford doctorate made me read it aloud, I thought I should use it. My first short answer was on dance and specifically choreography. My second was on nanotechnology and the evolution of my interest in it. My first optional essay was on an internship I held at a local engineering company designing software. My second was on two classes I took at Harvard this summer.
