I'm a junior and currently taking Latin III. I was planning on taking Latin IV next year but because only five other kids want to take Latin IV, my school is canceling it. My guidance counselor gave me the option to take it online but it would have to be during the school year and I don't think I'd do too well in an online classroom.
I know that UVA recommends having four years of a foreign language, so will this hurt my chances of getting in? THANKS!

It is not a hard and fast rule. They look at the totality of the difficulty of the classes you took in high school (after taking into account what classes were offered by your high school).

(My son was admitted with only 3 years of a a language in high school.)

I got in as an Echols Scholar with only three years of a language-- it’s not really a big deal.

You could look into taking at a CC/local uni at night. That is what I did my senior year for Spanish and Calc III. I’m sure you could include a note about it somewhere, and just make sure the class you replace it with is honors/AP level.

@soyeah - You can’t really make a blanket statement like that.

Time and time again Dean J has said they want to see your core classes (or solids) all four years (English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language). Then you get into exceptions. If you’ve finished Spanish 4 in your Jr year and your school doesn’t offer AP Spanish, for example. If you have a scheduling conflict between AP Calc BC and AP French and you’re applying to SEAS you’re going to choose AP Calc BC. If however you have a schedule conflict between AP Biology and Choir, yes that’s a conflict but you need to choose the academic course.

In cases where there your school doesn’t offer the higher level course, there is a schedule conflict and you choose the course more closely related to your intended major, your guidance counselor is going to write a note in the report they send. Often times when students max out their possibilities in a certain subject at their school they do look to online courses or their local community college. This is common with Calc 3.

Yes, students get accepted without taking foreign language all four years of hs. Make sure you replace it with another academically challenging course. Best of luck.

NOTE: crossed posts with hazel, I’m such a slow typer :o

haha blue, the other 2 posts before me weren’t there when I read the thread, I guess we’re in the same boat here haha

Double and triple check to make sure your counselor mentions that Latin IV isn’t offered in your senior year. It wouldn’t hurt to add a line in the “additional info” section of your Common App about that, too.

There are definitely times when a high school’s profile reports that they offer a course and no one mentions that the course wasn’t offered one year. The school doesn’t want to take it off the profile because they want to show that they offer it.

Wow thanks guys!!
And I talked to my guidance counselor today and she told me that she would call any colleges and tell them about how my school wasn’t offering it.

And for the empty slot in my schedule, I put in AP Psych so my schedule looks like
AB Calc
AP Physics C
AP Bio
AP Gov
AP Eng 12
Leadership
AP Psych

I’m kinda iffy on taking psych… any other suggestions?

You could take ap macro/micro if your school offers it… You could also look into a business or computer science elective, since they would be less work than an AP class but are still academic classes. What do you want to major in, any idea? I see lots of sciences… If you didn’t have a 2nd science I would recommend AP Stat…

I took 0 years of a foreign language, because no one knows them in my country. I still somehow got in. Thank God.
Is it necessary to take the foreign language placement exams? Because I dont know any European languages :/

No you can just start at the 101 level in any language.

Lots of people are involved in admission decisions. We take notes when we talk to counselors, but the timing of phone calls is tricky. Make sure the information is in writing somewhere, either in your part of the application (the “additional info” section) or in the counselor’s part of the application.

This is where the high school profile comes into play. If the courses aren’t offered at your school, we don’t expect you to have taken them. :)

Maybe talk to your counselor about letting the kids who want to take Latin IV be grouped in with the Latin III class. Our son was the only student in his high school taking Latin IV his junior year and Latin V his senior year (out of 600 kids in his class). It worked out perfectly fine. Talk to your Latin teacher(s) at the school and see if you can get their support. (I just wish our school offered AP Latin).

D was admitted to UVA with same situation…went through Latin 3. AP Latin only offered in one time slot that conflicted with another AP that she chose. Also got into Duke, Davidson and Wake Forest with same.

Now there is great value in getting through AP or 4th level so that you can potentially exempt language in college. It can free up lots of time at some schools.

BeachMom brings up a very good option. My son went through Spanish 5, however the year he graduated there were not enough students for AP French. They were combined with French 4. The student from that class that went to UVa did place out of the language requirement via the placement test.

wow so hazelorb are you in engineering? and which year are you in?
how many credit hours do students take on average?

I was in arts&sci/curry. I graduated a few years ago.
Students take 15 credit hours on average.

madara - My son is in the e’school. Students are required to take 15 credits minimum (or get a waiver from their advisor and the Dean’s office). The number of credits a student takes is going to vary widely depending on how much AP credit you are coming in with, if you are pursuing a minor, etc. For most majors the curriculum over eight semesters is going to range from 15-18 credits.

My son is finishing ninth grade and Latin 2. He would like to switch to French next year which means he will have had 4 years of a foreign language but only 3 of the same foreign language. Does that meet UVAs guide of having 4 years or does it need to be the same 4 years?
