I took French 1 as a sophomore, and French 2 as a junior. However, I will have foreign language class during my senior year. Will this be an issue? I couldn’t take French 3 due to a schedule conflict.
As long as Adcoms see that you are taking a 3rd year as a Senior, you should be fine.
agreed.
@Gumbymom @menloparkmom But I’m not taking a third year of foreign language. My senior year doesn’t have any language classes except for AP Lit. Sorry, there was a typo in my post.
OH, sorry.
it WILL be a problem if your DONT have 3 years of Foreign language by the time you graduate.
what else is on your schedule?
What schools are you planning to apply to and do they require 2, 3 or 4 years?
It depends if the university recommends 3+ years of a foreign language and why you have a schedule conflict. If the schedule conflict is through no fault of your own, colleges will be more forgiving. If the conflict is due to you doubling up on another subject, you’ll probably not get a pass.
@Gumbymom I’m applying early decision to Dartmouth College. I’m also applying to UChicago, Williams, and Ivies. I’m a native speaker of Hindi, if that makes any difference.
Here’s my senior year schedule:
AP Calculus BC
AP Literature
AP Physics 2
AP Biology
AP European History
Accounting
"If the conflict is due to you doubling up on another subject, you’ll probably not get a pass. "
I totally agree.
I’d take the French 3 instead of one of the AP science classes.
The colleges you are applying to expect 3 years MINIMUM of a .FL.
@menloparkmom The only way I can take French 3 is if I give up Calculus BC, which I definitely don’t want to do.
I found this on Dartmouth’s website:
“No. Dartmouth does not have any set academic requirements. For instance, four years of a language are recommended but not required.”
^^^^Just keep in mind that the vast majority of applicants will have the recommended coursework so you could be at a disadvantage if you don’t continue French. You might talk to your guidance counselor and see if he/she has any other ideas such as continuing French online, at a CC, in the summer etc.
My son had only one semester of college foreign language (equivalent of two years of high school) and got into Penn. He had planned another semester of foreign language, but decided he’d rather take Animation II, so we just the chips fall where they may.
It’s not a deal breaker, but it would definitely help if your guidance counselor would explain why you couldn’t take it.
“For instance, four years of a language are recommended but not required.”
ANYTIME a college says something is “recommended”, you should read that as “required”,
unless your HS counselor will state in his letter of recommendation that there was no way you could have done what is “recommended” because of scheduling conflicts.
