Oops! UCSD Sends Acceptance E-mail to Wrong List (NBC)

I would send them a reply saying “Yep I’ll be coming”. Twenty minutes later, when they realize I was not accepted, “April Fools, heading to Hahvahd”.

This article makes me think. Colleges handle SO many apps … can there be a chance that they enter the wrong decision into the computer and send out the wrong letter … like telling you that you’ve been rejected when the ADCOM let you in?

Yikes!

It would be nice to see what happens inside the admission office during the admissions season.

I was one of them!!!

I thought it was really funny… and knew there must be a mistake. it was funnier when I received the apology letter…
didn’t think it would make it on national news…

It is funny that actual students who got the email (in error) are handling it okay, and understood quickly it was a mistake. It is everyone else who is horrified by UCSD’s mistake, pitying the students, etc.

ab2013 makes a good point. Can clerical errors lead to real decision errors. Like someone putting the folder in the wrong pile. We will never know that.

Yeah, this seriously sucks. I’m hoping my acceptance to Cornell is real, heh…

I know someone who did apply to UCSD; fortunately, she read the “We apologize…” email BEFORE she read the “Congratulations!” email. Would’ve been much worse for her if she’d done it the other way around.

I got hit by one of these but I was just confused rather than excited since I am going to UCLA anyways.

This really got me concerned though, like the person above me, if my acceptance to UCLA was real too so I did all sorts of double checking ahah.

This is creating an unnecessary amount paranoia- now that admissions season is over and the anticipation is done with, we have to hope that our acceptance-or rejection- letters are valid.

Sheesh, what a year.

Can someone post the apology letter?

Zenbading - Admissions season is not over! Still waiting to hear from Wake, apparently a post office truck is idling in the back of some parking lot b/c 100s of kids in the NY metropolitan area are waiting to hear. All letters went out on Friday & admissions is getting swamped w/ calls! Some neighboring towns have heard-- some have not/

Yeah I got one of these too. I knew it was a mistake from the start though, since it was more an invitation to an event and only happened to mentioned that you were accepted. Thought it was just a typo. Didn’t even bother checking my admission status. I really don’t think it should “crushed” anyone, it wasn’t a big deal. Here’s the apology letter:

Here is the generic one they sent out:

Dear XXX,

Within the last two hours, you received an email addressed to students who had been admitted to UC San Diego.

As you have quickly realized, this communication was sent to you in error.

On behalf of the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools, we deeply regret this mistake, because we understand the level of distress it has caused for many of you. In all humility, I ask that you please accept my apologies and those of the University of California, San Diego… and know that we continue to wish you success in your educational pursuits.

Sincerely,

Mae W. Brown

Assistant Vice Chancellor and

Director of Admissions

And here is a personal one they sent because I emailed them:

Dear XXX,
Thank you for contacting us about the March 30 emails from UC San Diego. As you know by now from reading the second email apology, the first one was sent in error. Again, we are deeply sorry for the confusion and understandable distress this has caused.

We assure you this was not intentional but the fact that it was a mistake does not lessen the impact. We continue to wish all the best to all those who had expressed interest in UC San Diego by way of their application.

UC San Diego

Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools

If this happened at Harvard, would we be getting the same reactions?

I wonder.

That must have been very painful.

Back in the days when these things were purely handled by snail mail, I heard about someone at my college who had received both an acceptance letter and a rejection letter on the same day. She decided to assume the rejection letter was the mistake, and sent in her enrollment materials.

I once received a rejection letter from the HR department of my employer two or three weeks after I started the job.

I feel bad for those who have to go through this. All the excitement for nothing. =( I had this before but it was a rejection letter first and then an acceptance a month later. I had to call up the admission office to verify.

I just hope they can handle things better.

I think ^----that was funny!

you know what they say…tooooo goood to be true.

Haha that’s really funny. Yah, I got the letter too. I mean on one hand it was really funny because I didn’t want to go to UC san diego. But on the other hand, I was really excited when I got “un-rejected” and I thought that maybe they had made a mistake. I feel bad for individuals who were really disappointed about not getting accepted, and then reading this. I just can’t understand how this could happen. I mean it would be one thing if ucsd sent out weekly emails, but this was the only one I had received since I applied. I think they deserve all the press coverage so something like this doesn’t happen again. Just a thought.

Oh, just FYI, the same thing happened to me when I applied to Berkeley’s five-year BS/MS program in EECS. I got a notice asking me to sign up for a faculty interview, which served as the final stage of the selection process. Later in the day, I got another email informing me that the invitation was sent in error, along with a very forced, half-assed apology.

I think people are making too big a deal out of this… This just shows how desperate we are for admission. Then again, UCSD is at fault. In the end, its the admission letter that truly counts.

I got rejected by Rutgers, and a week later they sent me a letter telling me that they never received my transcript.

So I called them up and asked them how the hell I could get rejected if they had never even seen my grades, and apparently they had mistakenly sent me the wrong letter and the one they were supposed to send me was the one telling me my application had missing materials.

I sent them my transcript and got accepted, but that really soured the image of the school for me.

This is SO sad. :(
