Hi! I’m an oos student and I want to apply to UCLA’s Cognitive Science program. I am about to get a B in AP Bio and was wondering if I will still be able to get in. I’ve gotten 2 other Bs so far (1 in honors lit in 9th grade and the other in Honors Chem last year). My guidance counselor says I’m taking the hardest possible schedule but I know UCLA is still hard to get into regardless. If I get super high test scores (1450+) will this make my chances a lot better even if I do have a couple bad grades? Thanks!
What is your UC GPA? And can your parents afford to be full pay at UCLA as there is no financial aid for OOS students?
UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
OOS applicants can only use AP/IB or DE courses for the extra honors points.
Essays and EC’s are also part of the application review but GPA is king so strive for a rigorous HS schedule and good grades. Make sure your parents are OK in paying $55K/year for you to attend. I suggest you run the Net price calculator to determine affordibilty.
A couple B’s are not going to make you incompetent for UCLA, especially since you say you are taking rigorous courses. Calculate your UC GPA like the other two posters said.
A couple of B’s with a rigorous schedule will not be the fact that stops you. Keep working hard, develop leadership in EC activities, and take your best shot. Cahncing on these threads are pointless
You’ll be fine since you have such a rigorous schedule.
@Gumbymom actually they changed it this year so that you get an extra point for honors courses at your high school as long as they meet certain requirements
“Honors courses are calculated differently. In calculating an out-of-state student’s GPA, UC will grant honors weight for AP or IB courses only, but not for school-designated honors courses. The weight is given to letter grades of A, B, or C”

@ETH2355: HS honors still have to be UC approved based on the criteria listed. Any HS can label courses as Honors but they will not get the extra weighting unless approved. You can look up CA HS honors courses that are approved here:
