Real good thinking. We did the same and it worked out great. (Of course comfort might be urban rural, too, or big vs. small). Just to have some options, throw a couple in that are outside the zone.

By their very nature LAC's are far less likely to be suitcase school. First most students choosing to attend LAC's are more academically inclined. In addition, because of their size most students are involved in the life of the college via athletics, music, clubs, and other college sponsored activities. And even if a partiular LAC has a somewhat higher %age of instate students, the percentage is almost significantly smaller than a regional publei.

curmudgeon-I agree. When I say I want her to look outside her comfort zone I mean look at everything. She is not big on sports lets go to Ohio State and see a football game, she does'nt want rural how about we visit an LAC in the middle of nowhere. Will not consider all female lets go see Smith and Mt Holyoke. Wants to avoid Greek life lets look at a southern school like Furman. I hope she will consider everything. She has time to build a list. The schools she thinks she wants can be visited while we visit schools she can not imagine attending.

My D applied to Marietta College in Ohio, and was awarded nice merit aid as an OOS student, and offered a place in the leadership program. It's a beautiful campus, in SouthEast Ohio. She chose a different school, but thought Marietta had mnay nice things going for it.
I believe it is 37% OOS, and has many international students too. It's kind of off the radar but a nice little gem. She gave it serious consideration. Depending on how small she is willing to go, it may be an option for your D.
